CO alarm

Have a 2014 23IKSS that I bought in August. Yesterday I winterized it and everything went well. Some time during the night the CO alarm started sounding. I did not hear it until morning. I went into the camper and reset the alarm. I could smell gas. (I turned the gas off on both bottles yesterday.) So, I left the door open and turned on the FanTastic fans to ventilate. However, the alarm keeps coming back on after a few minutes. Any ideas? I rechecked that both gas bottles were tightly closed. And I made sure again that all traps are full of antifreeze to eliminate the possibility of sewer gases.

I have had the alarm go off using fabreeze. When I winterized mine, I had already removed the gas bottles and the last thing I did was spray some fabreeze on the cushions. The alarm went off, it did stop after I ran the fan for a few minutes but then I removed the battery so I don't know if it will continue or not.

You said that you could smell gas? I would disconnect the bottles and see if it continues. Good luck

Your Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector is probably a combined unit with the propane detector.

After you've aired it out well, I'd try lighting the stove burners to see if there is gas pressure there.

Perhaps you have a defective
"cheater valve"
that is letting sewer gas into the RV.

#1 cause of this is low trailer battery, not actual propane or CO issues.

do you have the trailer plugged in all the time, to keep the battery charged up?
if you don't, the detector and other parasitic power drains will empty a single batter in just days. and if you don't get on it soon, the battery will be permanently damaged by depleting it too low.

rarely, it's a bad propane/CO detector unit.

Thanks all. Yes, bikendan the electricity is hooked up and working. It finally cleared, the green light came back on and it stopped beeping. I assume some gas left in the lines leaked after I turned the tanks off. That is all I can figure. But it seems to be fine now.

I'm having a problem as well. When I use the starboard tank on my 2012 and use the hot water heater the CO alarm goes off. All the appliances are getting gas. I switch to the port side tank and no alarm. The tanks are full and the trailer is always plugged in on a 30 amp service. Weird. Any ideas on this?

Propane is heavier than air, thats why the detectors are mounted low. If its only doing it on one tank the leak will be in the "plumbing" from that tank to the change-over regulator. Make up a solution of dishwashing soap and water and brush all of the connections and hoses from that tank all the way to the regulator, also brush the valve "bonnet" with that tank open. It should bubble when you run across the leak. Good Luck

Good advice, thank you. So even though the regulator is outside the trailer about a foot from the tank it will still cause the CO detector to sound. One thing I should mention is that when this has happened there is no smell of gas even at the floor level. I'll following your advice.
