Dewinterizing 21RS Roo

Hi all,
I was told to repost my original post in this forum, as opposed to the Rockwood Forum for Ultralights ...

Just bought a 2009 21RS Roo and need to dewinterize. Can anyone point me to a link or a list somewhere that gives a step by step procedure for dewinterizing this vehicle? Don't see many 21RS s in the forum...my guess is that the dewinterizing process is pretty generic for many RVs, but so is a pilot's preflight checklist, and, like an aviator, I sure don't want to screw up preflight. My passengers would never forgive me.

Also, a shout out to other 21RS owners...would like to hear from you about your overall experiences with this model and any tips or tricks for trailering with it...

Thanks...this is a wonderful resource!

As you had guessed, there isn't much difference between the 21RS and any other Roo/Shamrock or even other campers except for placement of items.

Here's a link to a FAQ on winterizing/Dewinterizing. Post #5 in this thread is especially detailed regarding dewinterizing.

Muchos gracias! This is just what I was looking for on dewinterizing...a checklist! This bulletin board is a godsend...only problem is it is highly addictive and makes the day over before one has time to follow up on all the good advice contained herein. Because it is so cold here in Mi, that's not a bad thing.

Problem with this whole process upon addition of the bleach, I'm not seeing the antifreeze leaving the filter. So I'm not going to open the valves to my water heater. What am I doing wrong? I have a check valve running from my pump and I believe it's set correctly. The line connected to it runs from the antifreeze outlet to the pump. I think it's in the correct position, pic attached.

I let some of the facets run trying to get the antifreeze out of the filter cartridge and it's not budging, I also have restricted flow in the kitchen sink. I wonder if I have something obstructing the flow in the line. Brand new 21SS Roo. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm not an expert, but, I think you were supposed to remove the filter for the winter? I did, and my filter housing had a visible "gel" settled in the bottom of the housing before I removed and dumped it out when de winterizing. Maybe the "gel" has clogged your filter? Take out the filter and see if the plumbing works better.

Check the water faucet aerator for debris and while you are at it some members here have reported as many as four layers of screening, two should be more than enough.

Yes, the filter should be removed and discarded when winterizing. The AF in the filter housing and lines should clear if you are drawing water directly. Is the pump actually drawing water or having trouble drawing?

Thanks, the filter cartridge has no filter. The antifreeze appears heavier than water in the clear cartridge like oil and water. I traced the water line and found no leaks or crimps. I did find crud in the facet head, styrofoam, etc. once I cleared the restrictions I had good flow. I have two options for the filter cartridge....I can switch the check valve to the antifreeze line and hook up the water to the outside and turn on the pump to push the excess antifreeze into the system OR just remove the pressure from the line and then remove the cartridge and discard the antifreeze. The next question is how do I eliminate the pressure from the line to unhook the cartridge and do I need to refill it with fresh water and filter and attach? Thanks everyone!

Triguy, the pump appeared to be pulling air, the dealer had the check valve set to pull antifreeze so I was pulling air into the system. It seems to be running normal, I may have bleed the air out by funning water fir a while.

An open faucet or low point drain should relieve presure. I still like to place a bowl under the canister to catch the inevitable spillage.

the dealer had the check valve set to pull antifreeze
Just to be technical for a minute: You can't "set" a check valve. There is no handle or anything else on a check valve that can be set. If the valve has a handle, it's just "a valve."

A check valve is typically just a valve seat with a spring-loaded ball. Water flowing in one direction pushes the ball against the spring, opening up the space between the ball and the seat and letting the water flow. If water tries to flow the other way, the spring (and the water) pushes the ball against the seat and the water can't go through. Hence "checking" the flow.

So what I think you're saying is that there is a normal handle-operated valve between the pump and the AF connection that was left open?
