Direct TV?

We have practically lived in our new 23SS since getting it all the bugs fixed in early April. We currently have Direct TV service at home. Is is possible to buy a portable dish but use your receiver from home without buying a separate service package? Getting tired of fighting the antenna to get a channel in!

Looked up Direct TV online last night and they have a few paragraphs of info and basically send you four different dish dealers who's websites had even less information. Apparently you can't deal directly with direct tv like you do for home service. Thought I had read something somewhere where someone had bought a portable dish and used their home receiver but can't seam to remember where I had seen it.

We don't have any special package. We just took the receiver from our guest room at home that wasn't being used and leave it in the camper now. Bought an extra dish, which we cover in a plastic garbage bag when not in use, and leave it in the camper too. Take them with us wherever we go, and as long as we have a signal where we camp at, then we have satellite tv. Gotta have my NFL package in the Fall!

Does the dish just connect to the satellite hook up on the outside of the camper and the receiver to the satellite connection on the interior? I know this is probably very obvious but I just want to make sure I don't need special cables or anything.

Tolley 31: I would check Craigs list for a dish. If you let Direct know what you are doing they will want you to fill out paper work to get approval for going mobile. They may also change your package so you may not get your local channels. They usually give you what they call distant local channels which would be east coast or west coast. Setting up the dish is a bit tricky for the first couple of times. I purchased a satellite finder for about $40.00. Your Direct TV control box will also help you get the general direction and angle once you put in the Postal zip code. After that you can fine tune it by the signal strength on the TV. When you get to a camp ground look for someone that has a dish and ask for help, I have helped many campers with set up. Regards; Frank

Thank you everyone for all the help! We have our Xbox with netflix but sometimes you want to watch "regular" TV. Checked out hulu which can be used through the Xbox but it didn't offer any of the shows we watch.

Depending on your setup inside your unit, you may need to disconnect the cable that goes to the TV from the outside and also turn off the power antenna switch either in the back of the unit or near the TV. On my prior TT, I had to push the off button on the power antenna switch and the disconnect the "U" shaped coax cable at the bottom of the TV console. I then had to connect the DirectV box at this connection using some extra cable and a "male to male" connector. I also had to reset up the TV to receive this cable signal vs an antenna signal.

Hope this helps.

What ever you are paying -------------

What ever you are paying for at home, you will get the same channels including the local channels. But when you get about 225-250 mile away from home you will not be able to get the local channels, all other channels you will be able to get. If you use a receiver from home, that is your business, but DirecTV says no. You have to purchase a complete different package. A lot of people do use one of the receivers from home
with out DirecTV knowing.
So if you ever call them while on the road, you have to always use the home phone number as a reference for reboot!

It works, How do I know? well----------------

Thank you. What they don't know won't hurt them! I figure I already pay a small fortune for the service I shouldn't have to pay twice for it.
