UPDATE:

"If you back into a tree while you are hooked up to your TV, you are covered PROVIDED (for example) you have collision on your truck's policy AND the policy limit amount is sufficient to cover BOTH vehicles (IF both vehicles are involved)."

NOT TRUE After talking to our insurance guy (SHOULD have checked prior to posting):

If you are the owner of the trailer, they will not pay AT ALL to repair the camper.

If you BORROWED the trailer, THEIR insurance will pay for the trailer's repair (their insurance will recover from your truck's liability).

If THEY do not have insurance on the trailer you borrowed, your truck's liability will pay THEM to repair the damage YOU caused.

Happy Vibe hit the nail on the head. Most TV insurance will cover anything being towed. Like if you had an accident while towing. Once unhooked in the campground or in your driveway if a tree falls on it you are considered uninsured. I know from experience !!

"To retain plate liability insurance must be maintained continuously"

Reading from my NC registration renewal. Comprehensive is your choice.

Correct.

You are required to have liability on your truck; not collision or comprehensive.

You are not required to have liability insurance on your trailer to get a plate (in PA anyway) since it will not be the operated vehicle causing damage or injury.

Without collision on the trailer; you assume full responsibility for damage to your "owned" trailer; just as you assume full responsibility for damage to your "owned" truck (without collision on it).

With the investment most people have in their units and the minimal cost of RV specific insurance, like others have already stated it is a serious gamble to not have it covered.
Should have read this first. Exactly correct as well.

TT insurance

In BC Canada the minimum you need by law is liability insurance. However because a trailer is a major purchase item, it makes sense to cover it for loss due to fire, theft, vandalism and accidents.
Happy camping.

In OK, our tow vehicle liability covers trailer, but ONLY liability.
You definitely need to have a Comprehensive and/or Collision policy covering the trailer.

If you are financing through a bank, credit union, etc. they will require insurance on it.

Totally worth the cost. I paid for insurance on our pop up for 14 years until a tree fell on it. The insurance money helped buy my Roo 23ikss.

Only while connected (I.E. traveling); not liability in the campground unless it is on your auto policy as a separate vehicle.

And "You betcha" on the rest!

Thankfully we had insurance on our trailer last year when a storm kicked up and the wind flipped our awning up onto our roof. I was literally on my deck getting ready to roll it up when it happened.

The insurance covered the cost of replacing the awning, replacing the heating element in the water heater and one of our slide out seals. The guy that did the repairs even patched up a bad spot on our roof.

WOW!!! I insure my current trailer with Progressive for $443 a year. Having seen the rates you guy's are paying I need to do some serious shopping. I'm about to order a new trailer that cost substantially more and that's going to make the insurance a lot higher.

My experience with insurance has been for $60 a year they will insure your lug nuts with $1000 deductible.

In a word, YES!

The insurance is incredibly inexpensive, and if you have ever needed to use it you'd appreciate the fact that it is! Being that I live in NJ, my insurance on ANYTHING is more expensive than the vast majority of other states. However, it's only $269/year for $100 deductible including a couple of riders to cover the value of the add-ons and off-premise storage.

I am paying $40/month to insure my 23IKSS with a $500/comp and $500/collision. Insurance agent says it's based on replacement cost. How do I get them to reduce the rates other than raising my deductible? Only saved me a few dollars for $1,000 deductible.

Really depends on insurance company and their underwriters, and if you have multiple policies. Some just aren't great with RV insurance, just like some are bad with motorcycle and other types of coverages. Shop around because sometimes your regional market is to blame too. It can also be that insurance company's recent claim history. Around here, the storms of the last five years upped my rates because of the claim spike.

Just to add (even though I only read a few posts on this thread). If you look at my started threads, you can find the pictures of our accident this December. 40'less then two year old fifth wheel on its side after a loss of victim from black ice. I've paid around $600 in premiums, and the $1000 deductible. Insurance paid off my note and I have several thousand left to put down on our new one. Without that coverage, I'd be up a creek (realize I couldn't go without insurance since I have a loan)
