Thanks. I wasn't asking whether it's a good idea to (dump) water on the road. I was asking if it is truly (against) the law everywhere or just some states, provinces, parishes. You say 'They (SHP) use this law....' I assume SHP means State Highway Patrol (and) I was asking if this is true for all states. I'm (asking) if your "Fact not Fiction" applies to all states.

I would be real unhappy if I were driving down the HWY in a clean car or MH and someone was dumping water in front of me !!! Save it for your lawn !!!

I guess you've never had someone throw a cup of ice, soda, or coffee out the window, or had overspray from someone's windshield washers. Water is water and a small trickle from underneath the trailer shouldn't be such a cause for concern. Even worse is sucking in exhaust fumes from those diesel pushers and trucks or following a livestock trailer up a slow and winding highway. Just my two cents worth!

+1 however I put 1-3 gallons in Black Tank and keep 1-2 in Fresh but no more than that. If I am going on a long trip I run 100% empty.

Just use common sense and courtesy...

I don't know what is legal in my own state (let alone other states), but I try to avoid draining my FW tank on campsites where others will be staying after me, at dump stations where the water will make wet areas outside the intended dump basins (causing possible concern to others), or when driving down public streets or roads. This means I almost always end up draining my fresh water, if at all, onto my own driveway at home. Particularly on the road, most people you will encounter really don't know anything about the operation of a TT, and I am not interested in creating unnecessary concern or anxiety for third parties about what I am doing, however unfounded those concerns might be. However, knowing what is going on when I see it, I don't personally worry about it when others do it. As a practical matter, my FW tank is usually below 1/3 by the end of each CG stay, so I really don't see any urgency to drain the tank before I get home.

I have driven they NJ and PA with the freshwater valve open while driving, as long as it is only that can't see an issue any state might have

I agree with this and do the same most of the time. I've been known to drain the fresh water tank at the campground when, on only when it's raining. I feel better about not "creating unnecesary concern or anxiety..." Shame on me!

I am not sure why carrying 15 to 20 gallons of fresh water, until you get home is a problem ? 100 to 160 lbs. ? We have never been on a long trip, so not sure what I would do, I do like filling up @ home, I know what I am getting, Soft - Filtered H20.
Back when we had a TT and owned land up north, I would drain water tank on our land, before we left, but not on the HWY !!!

I believe dumping water @ a camp site or on the HWY is very inconsiderate !!!
There must be a better way !!!

Yes, for the most part I agree. I would also add that there are a lot more inconsiderate acts done at camp sites besides adding fresh water to the flora. Examples: not picking up your smoke butts and/or bottle tops, adding smelly bacon grease to the fire pit or that last pile of doggy poo before leaving. Oh! I think I just started a new thread for inconsiderates!

Because we owned or own land for about 16 - 18 years we have not spent much time in campgrounds, now that we sold our land and have a small MH we will be taking short trips, and I guess we will find out what goes on out there ???
I am think most campers are good people !!!

Could be considered Rude to dump water at a campsite that someone will come into after you. You would not want to come into a campsite that was wet and water was running and pooling in areas.

While we are on the subject of dumping the fresh water tank, how often do you dump the water in the hot water heater? We often have 3-4 weeks between each camping adventure.

We've gone all season never dumping the hot water tank. After arriving and hooking everything up, I'll open up a hot water faucet to let any air out, and then light the water heater. We've never had a problem. Hope this helps.

I drain it all, fresh tank, water heater, low points because I am never sure when it will go out again.

I drain everything after every trip. Most times opening both faucets then low point drains will drain WH as well. If you want to see what happens if you don't drain. Put 10-15 oz of clean water in a Tupperware type container loosely cover it and leave it sit on the counter in your RV until the next trip. Before leaving open container.
