Filter Housing Shattered
This is my second year de-winterizing the Roo 233S. I was shocked when I opened the door to the filter housing only to find it had shattered and all the antifreeze drained out.
It was completely full when I shut it down. It was a much milder winter this year than last year. So I'm wondering what happened and how do I avoid this in the future.
I've just run to Camper's Inn and got a replacement housing and bracket. They advised that I swap out the bracket since the parts essentially "mould together" over time. Wasn't too bad of a fix. But I don't want to have to do it again.
Thoughts?

You might consider abandoning that filter canister setup and go with an external filter. One of the first things I did to my rig.

We attended a seminar about winterizing late last year at our dealer. (They were serving a free lunch!)
Anyway the tech advised against leaving the filter housing full. He said there was a risk that the antifreeze could get 'slushy' and expand enough to damage the housing. I winterized our old 21SS 5 times and never had any problems so I discounted the tech's warning. But after seeing this I'm reconsidering. . .
I'm not a fan of the housing and proprietary filter that came with the 23IKSS so I'm also looking at removing it and going with an external filter setup.

Mine split last year, dumping water all over the back end of my 1year old ikss. Removed it, joined the lines with a sharkbite connector, and never looked back. This forum is full of posts about the cannisters either unscrewing by themselves or splitting and shattering. Truly a POS component in a $20000+ camper. Disappointed in FR for continuing to use it.

I kept the internal filter location but replaced it with a new residential model that uses standard filters. I also blow all the water out with air and only run a little antifreeze thru the pump until the filter housing is about half full.

I had one crack on our MH and was advised that the plastic container can get cold enough to crack, we full time and have a heater in the bay. I had a replacement so not a big deal but have not had any further issues. Could have been just a defective container.

An external filter only works with city water. We camp at state parks and use the water tank so we need the internal filter. Just something to consider.

A very valid point.
But, it's easy enough to fill the fresh water tank through the external filter. Instead of hooking the outlet side of filter to the city water inlet you put on a fill nozzle and stick into the fresh water fill. (Or whatever way you normally get water into the tank.)
It will take a little longer - depending on the flow rate of the filter you use but the water in the take will be filtered.
This assumes that you always filter water before it goes into the tank or you perform some kind of sanitizing between trips.

Big box stores sell these things. Go buy a complete replacement unit and install it. No big deal, lesson learned.

Winterize with an air compressor. Just use
The pink stuff in the drains.

You know, I have had -0- issues with my factory water filter, (2015 23SS) But the more I think about this, And the more I read, even with no issues (Yet) I think the external filter is the way to go. If nothing else because the filter is such I pain in the #$% to even get to. I find myself twisted, contorted and I have yet to not make a mess with it. I'm thinking I will remove mine as well, then I don't have to worry about winterizing, Making sure its not full but has enough pink, yada, yada. And BTW, the filters for the factory water filter are not cheap either.

If I was to consider removing my factory filter, what would I need to buy in order make the new connections?

We have had no issues with our filter I did add one of the home filters though so maybe that makes the difference.
I used to use the hose filters but also wanted the water filtered in the tank. I have nor camped in a state Park but when I dry camp I need to fill jugs to fill my tank. So I can't use a disposable filter without rigging up a pump to pressurize it all and force the jug water though a filter. Hence the house filter.

My original filter was replaced on warranty for failure to stay connected. they replaced it with a much simpler after market fixture. I would say that you can remove the entire filter assembly and substitute a PEX union that you can get a Home Depot or Lowes.

Thank you ScottB. I don't know what a PEX union is but I assume the nice people at HD will know. That is exactly how useful I am in the DIY world

Mine burst as well a few years ago. Went out early in the season and didn't pay attention to the temps dropping below freezing when we got back. I can remember where I got it, either Home Depot or lowes, but I took my filter bowl in and got one there that was exactly the same, bought the whole unit and just used the bowl housing. I believe it was made by GE and ran about $28.

Screw the disposable filter onto the hose bib where you fill your jugs. (State Park, home or wherever)
The water will be filtered as it enters the jugs with no need to filter it again when pouring into your tank.
