Thetford tote tanks don't have a good rep, compared to Barker tanks, on RV forums.

Just got back from 3 day weekend. Used the wash bucket and on Sunday afternoon the tanks were still at 1/3 full. Wow that makes a difference. I feel better. Still my need to get a separate portable tank for when we bring friends but feel much more comfortable about water consumption. Thanks for all the suggestions!

You could also let some grey water out in an emergency because it is only fresh water and we use very little soap except for showers

Where are you suggesting dumping the Grey water?
You don't use the kitchen sink, because that water goes into the Grey tank also, not just shower water.

This is VERY BAD advice!! Dumping (Gray Water) is NOT permitted in (Fed/State Parks)! This Dumping will also be VERY Inconsiderate for the next person who uses that Site! If you think it is Just Fresh Water ,You Drink it! Youroo!!

I simply do not understand the prohibition on dumping grey water. When I tented, one routinely would wash dishes in a tub and then simply throw the grey water off site in a bush or edge of the site. This was routinely done by all tenters. I remember brushing my teeth as a kid at the water faucet that tenters shared. This all seems a bit silly to me.

How does washing dishes in a camper sink differ from washing dishes in a tub outside? It is the same stuff. So a tenter can dump but a RV'r cannot?

So silly.

Vin.

Open the Door for Gray water dumping and THEN try to STOP a RVer with a (40-100 Gal Tank) from DUMPING, GOOD LUCK with that! Youroo!!

Gray water

Yeah I really think it is about amounts. Like you said, as tenters we tossed a little water in the weeds. No big deal. I want no part of pulling into a campsite and having 50 gallons of food particles and soap attracting bugs and soaking my shoes.

If you could rely on everyone to use common sense I am sure the rule would be relaxed. Common sense is in short supply.

For us we only use it to rinse utensils and I don't do this 99% of the time I only said in an emergency and not the whole tank just a little bit at a time. Not something I practice but last year we were near a hill and I could have emptied my entire tank but waited two days for a pump out, they were so busy and backed up (no pun intended) my tank was almost full. If grey water doesn't belong outside why have a shower on the outside of an RV?
