Thetford tote tanks don't have a good rep, compared to Barker tanks, on RV forums.

Just got back from 3 day weekend. Used the wash bucket and on Sunday afternoon the tanks were still at 1/3 full. Wow that makes a difference. I feel better. Still my need to get a separate portable tank for when we bring friends but feel much more comfortable about water consumption. Thanks for all the suggestions!

You could also let some grey water out in an emergency because it is only fresh water and we use very little soap except for showers

Where are you suggesting dumping the Grey water?
You don't use the kitchen sink, because that water goes into the Grey tank also, not just shower water.

This is VERY BAD advice!! Dumping (Gray Water) is NOT permitted in (Fed/State Parks)! This Dumping will also be VERY Inconsiderate for the next person who uses that Site! If you think it is Just Fresh Water ,You Drink it! Youroo!!

I simply do not understand the prohibition on dumping grey water. When I tented, one routinely would wash dishes in a tub and then simply throw the grey water off site in a bush or edge of the site. This was routinely done by all tenters. I remember brushing my teeth as a kid at the water faucet that tenters shared. This all seems a bit silly to me.

How does washing dishes in a camper sink differ from washing dishes in a tub outside? It is the same stuff. So a tenter can dump but a RV'r cannot?

So silly.

Vin.

Gray water

Yeah I really think it is about amounts. Like you said, as tenters we tossed a little water in the weeds. No big deal. I want no part of pulling into a campsite and having 50 gallons of food particles and soap attracting bugs and soaking my shoes.

If you could rely on everyone to use common sense I am sure the rule would be relaxed. Common sense is in short supply.

For us we only use it to rinse utensils and I don't do this 99% of the time I only said in an emergency and not the whole tank just a little bit at a time. Not something I practice but last year we were near a hill and I could have emptied my entire tank but waited two days for a pump out, they were so busy and backed up (no pun intended) my tank was almost full. If grey water doesn't belong outside why have a shower on the outside of an RV?

Yep, as a previous PUP owner myself, I totally agree with your tub water concept.

Just as RooVader stated, "it's all about having common sense", which I see could possibly be lacking if the rigs with larger holding tanks let their grey water drain ( sinks and showers both being utilized ) on their sites, and not be tossed into the weeds. Especially when the larger of the Rv sites are in the inner circle of some CG's. What a mess that would be, especially for the next camping guest.

Ohhh, what a "Mosquito Haven" that would make.

Gray water

There isn't a person on this website that wants to pull into a site after the previous occupant has dumped grey. You don't want it around your trailer, you don't want your kids to step in it, or your pets to get in it. I like how some think it's only about THEM dumping a little and others shouldn't complain.

An occasional tub is not the same as your RV tank.

Ps. I like good camping neighbors. I like a camping community of considerate neighbors. I would say when you dump in a site you're not a part of that community. To the vast majority of people who are kind and considerate. Thank you.

I can't speak for the intended purpose of the outside shower but ours gets used for basically three things:
1) rinse sand off our feet if we are by the beach
2) rinse the dog off if she has muddy paws
3) rinse my fishing gear off if it was used in saltwater

None of these involve soap - just plain water.

Always an interesting topic.....What is the downside of being on a site will full hook-ups and letting the gray water empty all the time?
What do you use to keep the sensors clean in the gray water tank.
The led panel most of the time says 1/3 full after the tanks are empty..

Thanks,
Jim

I rinse the hose with gray water after draining the black tank. Without that accumulation, I couldn't. There probably are other ways to accomplish that but, to me, it's easier.

Just got back from a 3 day weekend at a state park in pa. Dry camped for 3 days filled the fresh water tank when we arrived and made it throught. I brought the barker but after I got there realized that if I have 30 gallons of fresh water and 2 tanks to split the 30 gallons. Da not going to need the tank. So still have not used the tank. In 2 weeks doing 4 days in NH and 4 days in MA. Maybe I'll use it there.

For anyone that doesn't already know the first sign your gray water tank if full is water in your shower. I was down at the campsite office and I get this text "why is there water in the shower?" The sensors can't be relied on, mine just about always reads 3/4 full.

First time it happened for me in the last two years I've had a camper with tanks. I think I did alot of dish washing which contributed. For showers I normally go to the campgrounds site, much easier and alot more room.
