heated mattress

We are going to try and brave it in our Roo tonight. We are under a freeze warning and the temps are supposed to get down to 29. I talked to the service department and he said because our Roo is winterized we can't run our furnace due to the fact it will ruin our hot water heater. So we are going to be running our infrared heater and if I can figure out a way to get another heater going on a separate cord that is connected to our house. I thought about using our heated mattress feature as well. I was wondering for those of you that have this feature as well and have used it, does it really keep you warm or not? Would love your input! Thank you.

First, I don't understand the dealer's "connection" between the furnace and the water heater. I don't see how the furnace would ruin the water heater. I would assume you would actually be using them both, because the water in the water heater is going to cool off faster than usual.

I'd say set the infrared for one temp and the furnace for a lower temp.

The mattress heaters work great. Just don't expect to slide your hand under the covers and have it be hot like an electric blanket. It's only about 150 watts (same as a large light bulb). But it will keep you warm. We haven't been to 29, but we've been in the upper 30's.

It will also prevent condensation under the mattress.

19 degrees right night sleeping in the Roo. Heater going and mattresses on. Don't know what the heater would have to do with the water heater.

Did 22 in our pop up with heated mattresses and electric blanket and was too warm. Was running furnace and a little buddy heater on low. And I think your dealer gave you wrong advice on the furnace- run it all you want.

Had to be a misunderstanding.....no connection between water heater and furnace heater! My wife cranks up the mattress heater and electric blanket and it's TOO HOT!

I asked him point blank if I could turn off the hot water heater so when I turn on the propane to run my furnace and he said no. That if I turned on the propane it would tare up my hot water heater and that there was no way I could do it. I asked him then about turning off the DSI button on the control panel and then turning off the button on the HW heater and he said no. No matter how I explained it to him he just kept telling me no and if I did it would void my warranty. I may try and give them a call again and see if I can talk to a different guy in the service department.

I don't know if I would continue doing business with that dealer if they are professionals and they are that far off on how the different systems work.

There's no reason in the world you couldn't have the water heater totally turned off and still use propane to run your furnace and fridge and bake some cookies in the oven😄

Sounds to me like they're not understanding what you're asking. I'm assuming the dealership winterized it for you since they mentioned it. Part of that process is draining the hot water heater. If you ARE winterized and the water heater is empty, then DO NOT run it on electric or you'll burn up the element (propane probably wouldn't hurt it too badly, but it probably isn't all that good for it either). Point is, do not run an empty hot water heater. Furnace is something altogether different and it will hurt nothing to run it at the same time as any other system in the trailer.

The question I would ask the dealer that keeps saying no is why not n how is it gonna screw up the water heater by using the furnace n not using the water heater

Regarding the OP about the heated mattresses, we used ours for the first time last weekend and they work GREAT! We have a 3" mattress topper on the beds and could still feel the warmth from the heater. As others have said, it isn't "electric blanket hot", but it takes the chill out of the mattress and sheets. We were all very glad that we had them.

DK,

We are looking at getting a 3" topper as well. Is the 3" enough?

Thanks,

Jim

We've got a 2" and it seems to be enough.

I have used the mattress heaters a lot but not in such low temps. My complaint is that the heating elements get too hot. May not make sense but might suggest another heavy sheet between you and the heated pad.

On a side note I am at a total loss about why you can't run the furnace.

Hi Jim - We've been very pleased with the 3" topper we picked up. We got it from Aldi when they had their seasonal "back to school" items. I think it is a combination of foam and fiberfill. Provides just the right amount of comfort. For size, we got a Full size. Length is perfect. The sides of the topper are a little short of the sides of the mattress - maybe an inch and a half short, but we don't sleep on the very edge so it isn't a problem. I think what the topper is made of will have as much to do with your comfort as the thickness.

Update on the furnace thing: I called the dealership and talked to a different guy in the service department that knew what he was talking about and said yes, I can run my furnace and use my stove without hurting my hot water tank. So this evening we are going to try them out!!!!
