Hitch lock

Last fall our camper was stolen. The jerks who stole it, took a sledgehammer to the hitch lock and were gone within 5 minutes. Does anyone have any suggestions to keep thieves from straling camper while stored? How about a stored golf cart?

Mabye take the wheels off it? If they want it, they'll take it. They'll pull it by the chains, if necessary.

It was a very depressing video of it being stolen. I figured their was no way to protect it but thought maybe someone out there had a different idea. Thought about wheel locks or taking wheels off but thats a lot of work for us.

True. But some guy just posted that he drove off with them installed. They didn't stay installed long. The lock only keeps people from stealing the X-chocks, NOT the TT.

Insure it and don't keep anything in it that can't be replaced! Sure, it can be a pain to replace a camper, but fretting over trying to keep it from being stolen can drive you crazy. I don't worry a bit about my stuff being stolen, it's just stuff. Things of personal value are stored properly.

Well since I have been through the process of insurance and recovery, Aquaman, it is not as easy as just insuring it. It is a very lengthy process to get your insurance money and replace all the items inside your camper. Our Roo is definitely insured, but I am trying to keep it. The last one was heartache for my 7 year old. It is also not easy in the Dallas area to find Roos.

All great advise here. I think Aquaman is right about just keep insurance and hope for the best. These professional thieves when watching the storage lots video know exactly how to steal!

Doesn't the storage facility have some responsibility here?

The idea of the tracker(if it works) might be the OP's best way to find the stolen item.

I might just be your insurance.... I have done the process and it was fast and painless with USAA.

Either way there is not a lot you can do, secure it and hope for the best. Where I stored mine there was a clause in the rental agreement for storage that said the lot was not responsible for anything.

Storage lots are suppose to have insurance to cover such things. good lawyer would fix that. Later RJD

Not trying to start an argument here and it might be different from state to state but in Utah (where I Live) the law/code states a Storage facility is only required to provide "fundamental responsibilities which include fencing, lighting,and secure gate access" and as long as these fundamentals are in place the lot is not responsible for damage, vandalism or theft. It further states if those fundamental are in place but are circumvented then the storage lot is still not responsible an only if any of the fundamentals are not present or not working then the lot is responsible. Again it may be different state to state.

I went through this once a few years ago when I had some stuff in a unit that was stolen, the lot was not responsible but they helped (but not required to) with my deductible and my renters insurance covered the rest. When I stored my TT last year the clause read the same which matched with Utah code.

The storage lot has no responsibility for replacement other than taking reasonable care. They would be out of business quickly if they did. Too many opportunists out there. ........................or rates would be out of site.............

If someone wants it they will take, down the street from me someone ( I live in the country ) stole a flat bed trailer right out of the yard the owner watched it, it was mere seconds and it was gone. It was so fast before he knew what they were doing it was gone barely had time to yell All you can do is slow them down or deter them. I use a hitch latch lock, a lock where the ball goes, cables locks on both sides of the camper on the wheels and when camper is also in the yard I have a very heavy chain wrapped around the axels to a light pole and locked.

Ow sucks we have to do this for some ppl who decide to steal from others then make the money on their own and buy it themselves, hope that never happens to us but it does suck when you get robbed, it happened to me years ago and all you want to do is find the person and beat the pulp out of them. Sorry things have gotten this way but man it sucks

As for a tracker, if I was to use one, I would install in the refridge bay. Access to 12v and would blend in with all that "chaos". Only drawback is would be inactive with battery disconnect on but would become active when theives take unit back to their "lair" and turn power on to use. An alert goes to your phone and now you can call the po-po!

No, the tracker has it's own battery, lasts about a year, they are so cheap you could hide 2 or 3 of them.
