Home made awning cover for under $20

I got this idea from Trailer Life magazine, purchased two 10 foot aluminum gutters and slid them into each other to get the length I needed(17 feet) and then taped with aluminum tape. Wedged the outer edge of the gutter into the RV gutter and then let the cover assembly lay over the awning. Have also attached a photo.

Do you leave this on while driving down the road? If so, what keeps it from flying off?

Where do you store two 10' gutters while you're traveling?

It sounded like he only uses this when the rv is not in use...like only when it's in storage.

Maybe a strange question, but why would you want to cover your awning?

Since it appears to be outside storage I'd assume to protect the awning fabric from uv

Keeps the sun from destroying the vinyl. I do the same thing when I have the RV stored, only difference is I use the vinyl gutters. Less chance of scratching something over using he aluminum gutters. There are other threads on this subject.

Does having a cover prevent moisture from collecting in the rolled up awning while in storage? Mine is always damp when I unroll it. Back in the days when we had our Coleman popup, it was stored in a zippered bag and was never damp when we unrolled it.

I made a similar awning protector using vinyl gutter. I purchased mine at Lowes in 10' length. If the gutter is too short, you can purchase a connector to connect the two together and cut as needed. The gutter when placed upside down fits into the trailer rain gutter. But when windy it gets blown off. I took some small scrap pieces of vinyl, cut and placed like a wedge between the vinyl gutter in 4 different spots and the trailer gutter. So far it has stayed on in 30 mph winds.

I'm going to try it also! Thought about using a piece of plastic drain tile with a slit cut in it, for the same purpose. Much cheaper than the $150 + tube-like covering that Camping World sells.

Good idea if you store it at home. If you store it in a storage lot, what do you do with it when you leave?

Other idea. I had a good quality white tarp ordered up and I cover the top of the RV, leaving just enough overhang to cover the awning, topper, and all the top of the roof. I pre-attached to the four corners, parachute cord with looped ends to allow bungies (colored ones) to anchor it down.

White tarp does not conduct heat, looks better visually as well. Just sayin'

Some (most if not all) Tarps can trap moisture under them because they cannot breath which may damage a roof or other things up there. That's why it is not good to use the "blue" Tarps or similar as rv covers.

Nope. Tarp has been in constant use for four years, other than winter storage. Again, this is a rain shedding, UV application only. You will get sufficient air flow from the sides if you leave about 8" to a foot overhang.

We used to use a heave tarp on our TT,,, tied it down with rope & bungee cords,,,
The wind caused the tarp to destroy the paint on the corners of the TT !!!
