I scored my first big time idiot tax. So mad.

I decided to back up the truck a bit before bed. Of course the Roo is all set up for the night, the front bed down.

You know where this is going....

I started to back up, my foot slipped off the brake and there I go. Bam!

I nailed the drivers side corner of the metal bed frame of the Roo as well as put a nice sized dent in the tailgate of my truck. I'm so mad, but thankful nobody was hurt.

The corner of the Roo metal frame bent upwards, so ill need to try and straighten that out so the thing will close up (hopefully). There also seems to be some buckling on the lower or bottom part of the metal frame of the Roo bed door. Man I hope I didn't do any more damage than that. I know I'll need to get a new Roo bed door. Wow what an idiot tax. Just hope it closes so I can get this thing home.

It all happened so fast. If I could just take that 30 seconds over again.

Sorry to hear about your trouble but don't beat yourself up over it. Things happen. Like you said, no one was hurt and that's the most important thing. The Roo can be fixed.

Here is the damage. Edit - it looks like i may need to have the entire front bed replaced - Thoughts?

I'm sure a body shop can assist with the tailgate. Not too bad, but bad enough for me to fix it.

After a few beers to drown my sorrows late Friday night, we had a great camping trip!

Did some biking, nature center feeding of snakes, amphibians, etc. geocashing, and watched the NASCAR All Star race.

Great weekend - except for those bumps, bruises and bent metal.

Really sorry to hear this.

As for the bed, I would definitely replace it. I imagine that the bed will not seal when closed and you'll eventually have water damage.

I would also run this through my auto insurance. Have you checked on your coverage?

My wife and I were debating filing a claim. I'm going to take my truck to a body shop sometime soon for an estimate and also place a call with my Roo dealer about the front bed....see what I'm up against.

The Roo is back in the storage facility, which is covered, and will remain there until I figure out how best to proceed.

Thanks for the input!

Don't be surprised if they tell you that you need a new tailgate.

That's good. Find out what your true cost will be (net of deductible) and go from there. I typically ask my agent's advice in these cases to see what the risk is to my ins premiums (e.g., will they go up? When does the accident come off their record?, etc). I imagine you have done the insurance dance before (as we all have). Good luck and let us know what the cost is at the dealers for the bed and for their labor. The question comes up occasionally and its good info to have.

Will do Tri.

I've not had a claim on my insurance in a very long time (roughly 20 years) - so potentially having a double doozie is making up for lost time.

My wife's record isn't so clean but that was before we met .

Perhaps so dustman. For starters it's probably more difficult to repair the tailgate given the double ply, not to mention the various body lines/grooves.

Buying a tailgate is very expensive, but I'm going to research and stop by a couple of places for opinions.

I bet you are right about it being very expensive, too. Just be careful about getting it fixed. Even if they say they can fix it, like you said, it'll be really hard to get those lines perfect. Good luck.

I would sure try to bend back that front bed with a wide vise before I paid out of pocket for the new bed. You may even be able to devise something, such as two boards and bolt them together and tighten them up to straighten it out. Looks like the only real damage is it is bent at the hinge area.

Good luck, sorry about the situation, do let us know what the bed will cost if you decide to buy one though.

That's what my dad said Grizzly. I'm more concerns about it leaking down the road if I were to repair it myself, but at the same time, I could develop a leak at any time.

Tough deal for sure

I called my dealer and sent him pictures to get an idea of the next steps per his suggestion. He wants to get a quick look before having me bring it in.

The truck tailgate brand new will run around 1100. Looking more like an insurance claim to me.

Sorry to hear this ... It sure sucks to have our toys damaged but it happens, it only takes a split second for things like that to happen.

Were you able to see if there is any damage to the wall where the bed is attached ? It might look ok now but it might delaminate soon (hopefully not). I wouls surely want the dealer to have a very good look and then decided if I want to repair it or have it done professionally.

Did you consider junk(wrecking) yards for your tailgate ? You might be able to get a decent tailgate and just pay for painting which should be cehaper than buying a new tail gate from your dealer.

I didn't see any signs of damage on the wall or surrounding area, but that doesn't mean that delaminatjon won't happen I suppose.

I'm leaning towards buying a new bed door assembly and having my dealer do the work. If there is more damage, I hope it will be noticed then.

Good idea on the tailgate. I'm in no real rush to have that fixed - the Roo is more important at this point.

Check a site called auto-parts.com

You can find parts for the truck priced well and might just find the right color.

Unfortunately the only way to keep our trucks, toys, rv's and anything else in mint condition is to not use them! I think its all part of the deal....I tried to turn my trailer into a sail boat last weekend by putting out the awning in a hurricane (it crept in on us). Things happen....its all part of the deal.....

Little tangent...I have a buddy who's father would take a small ball peen hammer to every new car he bought. He would put a little dent in a hard to see place like a rocker panel or bottom of a quarter so that the first one was taken care of and the following dents and chips didn't really hurt so much. I think that's crazy but that's me.
