I was just thinking 'out loud' and in the end really came to agreeing with you since you could run the pump dry and thus cause damage. So... you were right all along and I was being an idiot.

On another side note, if this is how the valves were set for winterization only purposes, then it was still not correct, as the bottom cold water inlet valve also should have been closed to keep antifreeze out of the water heater.[/QUOTE]

The bottom one (which is the leaky one) was indeed closed during the winter. I was fooling around with the valves after I had turned off the pump and outside water.
