Microwave and potholes

I was wondering if anyone has had the misfortune of arriving at a campsite, opening the camper, only to find that the glass plate on the microwave has pushed the door open, fallen and shattered into a million pieces. This I'm sure was do to the one or two trillion potholes in the Northeast area.
We were lucky it didn't fall on the glass stove cover and shattered it as well.
I'm pretty good with coming up with mod ideas. Have to think about this one. Perhaps a plexiglass plate, but may warp over time.
Anyway, keep in mind when traveling.

One item on our "moving out" checklist is to "Stow glass plate from microwave". It goes in a drawer with towels.

We were shocked to find our plate on the loose once, but not broken. We still leave ours in place in the Windjammer microwave, but we make certain it is seated in the carousel AND that the microwave door is properly closed. The door has not come open and the plate has not again launched since my wife added that "check" to her pre-travel routine.

I didn't read the thread Vern linked to, so this may be X2 material, but you can cut pieces of those swimming pool noodles, then stand them up on end to act as a wedge between the carousel and a top of the microwave.

Here is a google pic. Many people I have seen use 2, but one in the middle should suffice. You just cut them a little long so they have enough pressure to stay in place. This has been on my to-do list for awhile.

We take our plate out and it gets wrapped in a towel and put in a storage box. On some of the roads we have traveled we need to tie the doors closed because the roads are so bumpy, no way I would leave the glass plate in the microwave .

We don't "store" anything but the coffee pot, icemaker is left on rear counter, mw door shut with plate inside, but we do have shocks on the 5er which does make a big difference regardless of the skeptics.

Yes,....This happened to us on a trip last summer.

We had stored a loaf of bread inside the microwave and when we stopped for lunch ....there it was.... shattered microwave platter ...all over the galley counter and floors...little pieces everywhere.
That leg was a rather curvy / bumpy one and we tried to figure out just how it happened, but it must have been the weight of the platter hitting the door that popped it open.
It hit the sink but fortunately did no damage...we continually found pieces of the glass for the remained of that trip.

My fix : Use a piece of pool noodle cut to fit snugly and place it vertically between the top inside and the platter.

I recently installed a Trail-Air Tri-Glide King Pin Box...this has proved to be well worth the $$'s. The rig rides much smoother, no chucking in the cab and from tests I did with items inside the 5th wheel they do not get the 'bounce' they used to.
I agree with 'OldCoot'....that 'shocks' on a trailer would certainly be a benefit .

hope this helps

I kept the styrofoam packing material that shipped in the microwave. I just replace it when traveling.

We too repack with the styrofoam blocks, but our first trip out, the door came open and the styrofoam and tray wound up on the floor. So I added a clip designed to keep kids out of fridges/cabinets.

I have always usea a pool noodle or paper towel tube to hold ours in has worked for a long time and all roads we go on seem to be rough what ever state we are in. I have been thinking I would get the larger diameter pool noodle to try looks it might be even better.

Yep. I learned that the way most everyone does and you might have. I now take the glass out and place it on the couch.

I will not fall for that trick again.

We just stuff a small pillow in the microwave and take it out when we arrive at destination. Never had any problems and have hit some pretty large bumps in the road.

Ours also fell to the floor once but did not break!!
I put a small hook in the cabinet next to the door and used a tiny bungee cord to hold the door shut after that. Also stuck the plate inside a bubble envelope inside the MW and used the bungee! We've found coffee cups flipped upside down inside the cabinet before. It's a rough ride back there for sure!

So I posted my pic of my microwave strap yesterday before we drove home from the CG. Drove home, DH goes inside to retrieve items from fridge, comes out and says to me, "Why did you put the dishpans and dish drainer on the floor?" (We have 2 dishpans and the very small Camco RV dish drainer which fits inside the 2 dishpans for travel) I said, "I didn't- they were in the upper cabinet". He makes a funny face. Apparently the upper cabinet doors opened, the dishpans fell out, and the door swung closed again. I didn't put one of those tension bars across that cabinet because I didn't think the dishpans were heavy enough to push the door open, nor was I worried about them breaking if they did escape.
I guess it's bumpy out there!

What perfect timing on reading this post.

My Microwave has a little bit of a stick to it when I open it and I thought when we got back home after the this past weekend outing I was going to WD40 it. Hmm, now after reading these posts it has me thinking the "STICKING" is not such a bad thing after all.

All our trips out on the road with the camper, bumpy roads and all, and never a problem with the microwave door coming open. So I guess the old saying goes...." if it ain't broke ( just slightly stuck ) don't fix it".

Some great ideas being tossed about here...but in my case I think I will leave it.

Leave things on our counters all the while and never had anything move. Even when I hit a real rough Railroad track an believe me the wife and I thought fridge, microwave and cupboards would be open and everything would be all over, still nothing moved. We hit so hard I thought it was going to rip our hitch off.
