Near Philly. Where to?

Thinking of taking a family weekend trip in late March with the 23IKSS before we park it for the summer on the Chesapeake.

We're just north of Philadelphia, perhaps a southern direction is best that early in the season.

Suggestions on a short range destination?

Thanks,

Todd

Come down to Delaware and check out Lums Pond about a hour south of Philly so a quick ride and open all year.

Not sure when they open but we've camped in Elks Neck and few times... One of our favorite State Parks in the Mid Atlantic area.

Agreed, we used to go there a lot, we keep a boat on the Elk River about 15 min away.

We found Woodlands Camp Resort up by Elkton, even closer to the boat, and now keep the camper there in a seasonal spot.

Let's us bop down to the Chesapeake in a car for the whole weekend, don't have to run all the way home each night.

We've decided to do Monticello and Colonial Williamsburg, a 5 day trip. Anybody done camping down there?

I worked 2 summers at the Rodney Scout Reservation just north of Elk Neck SP. 1969 and 1970.

I don't know if the Cherry Trees are blooming yet or will be when you take your trip, but that would be high on my list if I was on the East Coast. Plus if you have kids they have lots of museums if you have not taken them their yet.

Spend some time in Charlottesville, VA, to see Monticello and also James Madison's home (Montpelier) just a few miles north of town. You can do both tours easily in one day. There is a great KOA just a few miles from Monticello. If you have enough time, also tour the campus at University of Virginia, one of the most beautiful college campuses in all the world.

Not sure what you were thinking of late March. But if you have some time, the College Park Md CG would be a great choice. Also Elk Neck. Stayed there many times. Both are close to Philly and the Cherry Blossoms. We go every year as I live about 10 miles for the White House. Anyway, this was posted on the blossoms website. Have fun whatever you choose.

The Washington Post’s Capital Weather Gang has issued their first peak bloom prediction for 2017: sometime between March 15 and 19.

Kid got a stomach bug and fever yesterday, day before we were supposed to leave, thought we were scrubbing the trip, but she bounced back overnight and we hit the road this morning.

Hit Montpelier on the way down, which was awesome (I didn't realize the extent to which Madison had been the force behind the Constitution). Cherry blossoms in bloom, 70f, wonderful weather.

Now drinking wine sitting fireside creekside at Misty Mountain Campground. Somehow my carpenter level and Bluetooth outdoor speaker took a walk over the winter, but all else is a-ok after my 23IKSS's long winter nap.

Bring on summer!

Toddavid, happy to know you are having a great trip. Hope you had a chance to visit Monticello, as well. If you head East from Charlottesville, you may want to visit Williamsburg and Jamestown for terrific historical content. There are replicas of all three ships that the original settlers sailed on in the early 1600's, and one not much larger than a school bus!!
