I would absolutely upgrade your tow vehicle. I am not sure what the "smallest" vehicle would be but I like having something with the longer wheel base of a full size pickup. I am sure there are a lot of SUV owners that will weigh in.

My 21DK and F150 are a very nice match and I wouldn't go smaller personally because the tongue weight is very heavy.

Our Roo is on order. We are just waiting for the word to put our '98 Coleman Sunridge up for sale. Looking forward to many happy years with the Roo and chatting on this Forum.
Question: We presently drive a Ford Escape. Will we need to upgrade to a larger vehicle, if yes what is the smallest vehicle we can get with the towing capacity for the 21SS?
Yes, you will definitely need to upgrade your tow vehicle (TV). IMO, even a "mid-size" pickup like a Toyota Tacoma or a Chevy Colorado will be undersized for the 21SS and the 23IKSS, especially if you have more than 2 passengers in the vehicle. It's not because they can't tow the weight but because of a lack of payload capacity. (If you search the topic here you'll have enough reading to last until your Roo arrives!)

I would suggest you invest in a 1/2 ton pickup or a SUV based on a 1/2 ton chassis. Either one with a factory towing package should work fine. I've always bought good used vehicles about 3 years old to save big $$.

And get a good quality WDH like an Equal-i-zer brand. A 10K Equal-i-zer should be more than adequate for the 21SS.

Where did you buy your 21SS?

I looked at the Tacoma their Max Tow is 6800#'s and payload is 1500 still under what you need for a 19 or higher Roo, I went 1/2 Ton F150 and glad I did

Thanks! This will be my fifth time going to the Keys, but the first with the camper. Last time was spring 2014 and that was right before we purchased our 23IKSS. We tent camped for the week, and I think that was the tipping point for us. It was fun, but the comforts of an RV were calling our name.

OH MY GOSH, YES!

Are you aware of what the 21SS weighs and how little the Escape can tow?

The 21SS will weigh 5000lbs or more, when loaded for camping. Your Escape has a max towing of only 3500lbs IF it has the factory tow package.

So that eliminates minivans and CUVs.
Even eliminates the new Explorers.

You're looking at Tahoes, Durangos or Jeep Grand Cherokees, with v8 engines.

I figured that's where you bought it. There aren't many Rockwood dealers in Ontario.

Did they ask what you're towing with? If you told them and they said your Escape can handle the 21SS I'd be more than a little ticked because it definitely won't. The 21SS is a great floorplan but as bikendan said, it's heavy. You'll likely have between 550 and 600# on the tongue.

I'm lukewarm on Mackenzie. Their service department did decent work on my Roo but they were terrible at communicating. I prefer Campkins except that they don't sell Rockwoods or Flagstaffs. But they can get FR parts.

New member & new Shamrock 23IKSS

Even towing with a Non V8 Gas or Diesel Cherokee can be rough. I chose a F150 SCREW SB EB 3.5 with 3.55 and glad I did.

With the Roo I am far away from my Max Tow and plenty of wiggle room for payload as it is mostly GF and Myself and 200#'s of misc crap. I am very happy with the way the whole thing tows with the Anderson Hitch
