Hmmmmmm. Back to the owners manual I guess for me . I know that you can pull down on the side of the awning to angle it then use the knob to tighten it. I don't think you can do that with it not fully extended.

We extend it to the point where the short front flap that hangs is facing the ground or parallel w/ the camper. The owners manual said not to over extend the awning beyond that point.
