Propane odor

We are planning to head out tomorrow but there is a strong gas odor at the tanks, and outside only.

The tank was filled about 2 weeks ago and then used a little. The trailer has been sitting on the pad since then. We have the gas turned on and the odor is strong, again outside only. It is running the refrigerator only.

Any suggestions? My husband checked connections and they seem to be tight.

Use soapy water on all threaded connection and regulator and look for bubbles indicating propane leak....

Was camping with my brother this summer and we detected a slight propane order while sitting outside. I have a propane sniffer and using it we found the problem to be a bad hose. My brother was impressed and was going to purchase a sniffer; it's a good investment.

Thank you, I think we will stop at Camping World on the way south. Or, do you think any hardware store might sell them?

Maybe Home Depot and I know Amazon has them.

Yep, husband is on way to Home Depot, they are holding one. We wanted to leave early tomorrow and this almost put an end to that. I finally got him organized, somewhat, so that we could leave early. I do the driving and like mornings best and he doesn't. This way he can sit with the dogs on his lap while I do the driving.

Thank you everyone for such quick answers. This has been so helpful.

My hoses got old and stiff and started leaking. New ones solved the problem.

Thanks Brian, but the trailer is only one year old. At first light of day we will go out and try the new gas detector.

I'm ready to go, just have to light a fire under husband......just not outside by the gas leak!!

Could be a fitting or a hose or the regulator itself.
Good luck!
You should not smell LP around your trailer!

Have you locate your leak and is it fix?

Not yet Fonzie. We stopped in Champaign, Illinois and I could smell it coming through the bunkend. We closed up and the campground owner got us a hotel room. He called a repair man and he says he will come out this afternoon.

When I used the gas detector the odor was the strongest at the connection. We are heading back there in about an hour, hopefully the trailer is still standing!

The owner says no charge for last night and he has saved the spot for tonight.

Bonnie

p.s. The campground is D & W Campground in Champaign, Illinois
