Propane tanks

The paperwork and ads se to indicate the tanks are 20lbs. I asked at the walk through if they were the same as the Blue Rhino swap tanks I use foru grill and he said yea same tanks as gas grills. Looking at the blue rhino, the seem to be 15lb tanks. I'd sure hate to go trade and wind up 10 lbs short. Anyone else dealt with this or you just find a place that fills them?

I would rather refill, you never know what the rentals have been thru and I would not want to find out the hard way.

It is no real effort to remove them and the RV dealer sells us propane for a buck a gallon.

By us Home Depot has an exchange program but you only get 15 lbs of propane (small sign) but they charge as much as propane places charge for 20 lbs.

  • A 20lb tank holds up to 20 lbs of propane. A lot of exchange tanks are filled up to 15-17 lbs. This is because the tanks don't always accept a full 20 lbs. So they do a standard measure so they are all the same. Also a rip off because you may think your getting 20 lbs of propane. All 20lb tanks are not equal
  • By the way, when you pay $1.00/lb it's the same as $4.70/ gal. (4.7lb=1 gal)

I fill 30 lbs for $18 at Costco in Canada. That is a great deal compared to what I see south of the border.

If you have 20 lb propane tanks they are made to hold 20 lbs of propane. The exchange places are only filling the tanks to about 75% (or 15 lbs). This post (linked below) will explain this practice better, along with how to weigh your tanks, and also what to read on the tanks to get the empty weight and full weights.

Hope it helps:

propane

The whole thread is good, if you want to take the time to read it.

It may not be that they're filling to 75%. I made the mistake of swapping one of mine on my last trailer for Blue Rhino. I handed the guy my tank and moved the truck while he got the other tank out. I didn't notice until I got to the house and put it on the trailer...it was definitely a smaller tank. Close enough that I didn't notice without them being side by side but, sure enough, only 15 lbs.
