Question on Roo Heated Mattresses

Heading out next Friday for the 2nd trip in my new 21SS (and the last one of the season ). I've been checking the 10-day forecast & the temps the 1st few nights are supposed to be in the 30s. Guess I'll be taking my down blanket & checking out the furnace in the Roo. The Roo has heated mattresses so I thought I might try those out also. EXCEPT I remembered that I have a 1-1/2" memory foam topper on the mattress. So, now I'm wondering if the mattress topper will block the heat from the mattress pad. Or if you should even try to use the heaters with a mattress pad? Especially memory foam since it's pretty dense. Anyone have any experience with this? Or and advice?

We have successfully used the mattress heaters, but not with a topper. We use rectangle sleeping bag, set the heater to maximum and turn it down as we get comfortable.

I would try the topper. Would also like to know your experience.

I have them too. I find they work best with a blanket on the bunk first.(this helps absorb any condensation you may get on bunk when its cold. Then the memory foam. Then a sheet over the mattress. Turn it on a few hours before bedtime and you will love it.

Last week we bought a 2" memory foam topper. We put it on and didn't use the mattress heater. Temps went down to about mid-40's. With flannel sheets, one blanket and a comforter, we were toasty. Not sure if the mattress heater would have "gotten through" the foam topper if we'd used it, but it certainly wouldn't have hurt.

Last year had just the mattress w/ heater and upper-30's and were fine.

In both cases, we had an electric heater turned on with the temperature setting down low, and the furnace set at 64 degrees as backup. It ran a few times.

If I were you, I'd hook up the mattress heater and if you need it, turn it on. I think you'll be OK.

We turn on our matress heater about 1/2 hour before bed and it goes right thru the memory foam. I think we have 1 1/2 inch.

Don't forget a electric heater and extension cord as backup just in case of extra cold or furnace issues.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I think I'll give the heated mattress a try. The idea of crawling into a pre-warmed bunk sounds great!

we've used the mattress heater with a foam topper and it still works just takes longer. we too, pre-heat the bed so it's toasty getting in.

in case you don't know, the mattress heater requires 110v AC shore power and will not work off of the 12v DC battery.

We used the mattress heaters last weekend with temperatures in the 30's. They worked great!

Our 2014 works just fine. We leave all 3 beds plugged in all day at 6 and dial it down when we get into bed.

Dropped to 2C last weekend when we were out and we were nice and warm inside. It keeps our bed nice and warm even through the 1.5" foam topper we have on top of it

I don't have a topper maybe I need something to trap and hold the heat. Don't get me wrong the beds are not cold just not warm not until I'm on them. Then they work awesome

IMHO, the heater seemed to keep the mattress comfy, not really heated per se. We did use our topper and blankets and were comfy with temps in the 40's.

The heated mattress only work when their is pressure put on it (laying on it). We use ours with 4in memory foam on top it works well we turn it up when we put topper on then turn it down at bedtime

The heaters are only about 150 watts, basically as much heat as a good sized light bulb. They are NOT like electric blankets. I found this out the hard way. First time I tried them, I kept putting my hand under the covers, expecting it to be warm like an electric blanket. The plug is very hard to get into the fitting on the mattress, so I thought it wasn't getting in far enough to make an electrical connection, so I "filed" down the outside of the plug, hoping I could get it in better. (Didn't help, but it made it look ugly.) Ended up giving up and getting into bed, and discovering an hour or two later (the wife had turned it on, even though I had given up) that it was quite warm in there! Then I read here that it's only about 150 watts.

I have a 3-4 inch topper. I use an electric blanket. I doubt that the mattress heater would get through the topper. If you have shore power anyway, I believe an electric blanket works better.

Would it be a good or bad idea to put something like a space blanket under the mattress to direct the heat up?

Never tried it. Cant hurt..if its really cold you may get some condensation between bunk( cold) and mattress(warm). The heated mattresses work great!

I put one under the foam mattress in the old Bell pickup camper I had, it helped some or I thought so but it was not heated .

I wondered if it would cause a problem with a heated mattress.

You're about to discover the wonderful world of heated mattress's in a hybrid. If you're like me you sleep better when the furnace isn't cycling on & off all night. Turning up the mattress means you can turn down the furnace a degree or 2.

p.s. don't forget to crack a window or vent to help control that condensation under the mattress and on the windows when the temperatures get colder.
