Regrets, or why didn't I listen to you guys?

Got set up last weekend. Everything good but faucet sputtered with no water pressure. Went around back to check the pump. Opened the door to find water spraying everywhere. Filter housing had split. Shut off pump, removed filter, cut lines, made short trip to nearest town. Ace Hardware had Sharkbite connector. Made connection and all was good. Should have listened to all the good advice on this forum and made the change at home, not in the field. By the way, why is FR still using these things?

Your miserable situation will hopefully get the point through my thick skull to actually tackle this project. Sorry, but thank you.

Could you please post some pics?

My filter canister (in the same cabinet as my water pump and water heater) is of a heavy plastic (no, really, the thing weighs a couple pounds even empty) It is beyond me how this thing could split open. But my trailer is a 2008/9 and maybe something has changed.

What, if anything, happened to cause yours to fail? Or was it just poorly made?

Sorry, no pics available. I pitched the offending piece at the campground. To clarify, the canister didn't shatter. Sorry if I gave that impression. It had a hairline crack running vertically. It was enough that when the system was pressurized by the pump , water sprayed all over the compartment. The fix wasn't difficult since the lines are flexible pex tubing and there was enough slack to make it work.

Yours is old enough that it most likely doesn't have the crapper there putting in the new models that takes a filter that only fr has iirc.

My new 16 has a smaller diameter plastic container and it is notched on the top where you screw it in. You really have to put the tool on it to get it to turn and bump over those notches, hopefully this was forest rivers way of fixing it...

That sounds like it would correct the unscrewing itself problem but it would not have prevented my situation. One step at a time for fr. And I don't mean to sound down on FR. We've had our camper for a bit over a year and this is the first problem. Overall very satisfied. It just seems like this is a well documented issue and no changes have been made to correct it.

Not sure if this helps during my PDI they said when you winterize make sure there is no water on the canister threads. When the water expands it cracks the canister and then it continues to split. I use the compressed air method and leave the canister off during the winter.

Don't know about the winterization as I had the dealer do it the first time. Sounds like a possibility though since that is exactly what happened to mine. Thanks for the heads up.

FR is still using 'these things' because they are an inexpensive solution, and FR is in business to make money.

The first thing that I did last year was pull out the water filter that was just about inaccessible and bypass it and go with a walmart external filter. No more winterization problems.

Does this shark bite connected come in different sizes. What should I get? Roo23 IKSS 2015. Will I need extra tubing to connect the two pieces back together?

When I removed mine, one side had about a 2" reinforced vinyl hose section with a PEX crimp ring. I cut the crimp ring off with a diagonal wire cutter and slid the barbed end out of the hose. After removing the canister and wall bracket, I could just turn it off the other fitting (which was an elbow into real PEX). Then I found a double-female connector with the right thread (for $0.89CDN), threaded in the straight connector that I pulled out of the vinyl hose, screwed it onto the other connector that was still attached to the PEX (teflon tape on both), slipped the barbed end back in the vinyl hose, one small hose clamp and done!

Now I have a lot less volume to the plumbing system (won't take so much antifreeze) and don't have to take off the canister to drain the lines between trips. No worries about it freezing/cracking/unscrewing and the carbon filters for the external filter I already had lying around are 1/3 the price of the KW-1.

Anybody wanna buy a complete FR1 filter unit with bracket, canister wrench and unused (still in shrink-wrap) KW-1 cartridge?
