Replacing Pinch Welt on Roo Bunk Doors

Has anyone ever replaced theirs? How did you remove the old pinch welt seal and secure the new one?

Dealer replaced our front bunk seal soon after purchase. They gave me enough to do the rear if ever needed. The old pulled off with a little effort and the new went on the same.

Hello.
I've been through the process of replacing the pinch welt. I had leaking issues with the bunk ends of my 2010 Rockwood Roo 233S. I still feel it was a design flaw that was corrected in later models but don't hold any hope for Forest River upgrading the bunks.

At first I noticed the pinch welt seemed to be on wrong. The top did not overlap the sides to prevent water going down behind the side pinch welt.


I also noted the frame screws for the bunk ends were protruding up and positioned along the pinch welt. This prevents a tight seal.


I ordered the welt from Forest River direct. The old welt pulls right off and the new presses right on. You could put a sealer or gasket glue on it but I haven't seen the need. I did make sure the new top welt overlaps the sides and used silicone sealant on the corners. I replaced the existing frame screws with flat head stainless steel and used 4200 boat sealant in each hole.



I also noticed the black rubber gasket was loose so I removed that and re-glued with that yellow gasket glue.

I replaced the black pads under the door latch hoping for a tighter seal. After a month the pads retain their shape so I don't think it helped much.

After all this, I still had leaks. Using a hose you could see the water running down the inside. I did some more searching and found a fix by another member. They made a PVC device that prevents water from reaching the top of the bunk ends. I built the same and it has solved my problem. My trailer was covered this winter but uncovered in the spring and has sat during numerous rain storms. The mattress have remained dry with no sign of water.

I also added a rain gutter above the side bunk to hold the Pipe. For some reason Forest River failed to put a gutter to keep water away from the bunk end seal.

I tried to use a foam rubber weatherstripping over the frame screws but I can't find anything thin enough. I need something about 1/8" x 1-1/4" to work.

Itat: I needed three lengths of 2" PVC. I attached another rain gutter over my third bunk.

As for the weather stripping, I didn't use any over the frame screws. I replaced the screws with stainless steel using white marine caulk in the holes. There is still a slight gap between the pinch welt at the top but this pipe device prevents any water from getting on the seal and leaking through.

I've been told by 2 people that in order to get the door frame screws more square I should drill out the screw holes a bit to accept screws one size larger and replace the stock screws with bigger screws. Did you have to do that? Obviously you have the same issue with the frame screws not being drilled square to the frame.

I would think that would work but I didn't do that. Because I switched to stainless steel, the threads were already a little different. I made them as tight as I could and the marine caulk/sealant keeps any water from following them in.

I'm attempting to use this method to solve a water issue in my 2005 Roo 233. I do have new pinch welt and new rubber pads for the latches being delivered this week. I would like to try to add some additional insurance to keep these bunk doors from leaking.

I bought a 10 ft piece of sch40 pvc and cut a strip out of it (which is a total beast to keep straight, I'm curious how others have cut a clean straight line. I bought a mini circular cut off saw and its really hard to get a clean straight edge with. I've also tried using an oscillating tool which I feel like is more controllable but takes FOREVER). I'm wondering where the weather strip in the pipe makes contact since there is only one side that has the weather strip. Is it the j channel 'gutter' on the camper or does the weather strip sit snug against the bunk door? I feel like its definitely the j channel but wanted to see if someone could confirm.
