Rim measurement

Ok this may be a dumb question, but here goes. I finally received my extra HWT Series 06 rim (w/no tire). It looked big so I measured the diameter and it was 15-5/16" from edge to edge. This concerned me since it's supposed to be a 14" rim.

The paperwork says 14" rim too, but since I've had issues getting the correct rim I wanted to be sure. Just to verify it was the correct rim I drove over to my Roo and since my other rims are mounted on the trailer I could only make the same edge to edge measurement and it was the same (15-5/16").

Now the tire size listed on the tires is ST205/75/R14 (which tells me it's a 14" rim size). Anyone know why a 14" rim actually has a 15" diameter?

You have to measure the rim where the tire bead sits. Not the outside dia.

You are measuring the flange, not the surface the tire actually seats on. The ID of the tire will be very close to 14" as will the surface of the rim that the ID of the tire sets on. The flange is what actually holds the tire on the rim. The flange will measure 0.656" (just over 5/8") deep all the way around the rim.

Ok thanx guys. That makes much more sense now. I've never gone and measured a rim before so it confused me and I didn't want to have to suffer another another 4 months of emails & phone calls to get another rim.

I appreciate the info.
