Safe towing weight

I have a Ford 2010 F150 5.4L Lariat Supercrew 4x2 truck. With towing package. What is the safe towing weight for this truck. Truck has auto sway control. Also purchased a sway control, weight dist hitch and brake control. Dry weight on the new ROO 23IKSS is 4936.

Planning on going up some mnts. to Yellowstone with this rig. Any advise on this setup?

Photobill, you can get all those numbers from the Ford website or Edmunds for your particular truck. Best also to check the manual that came with it and the weight sticker on the driver's door jam.

Once you have all of your material, go and use the excellent towing calculator from Changin Gears. Here's a link.

You will need to estimate the "wet" or loaded weight for your camper. The dry weight is a very misleading number. Loaded weight should include battery, propane, a little water, all supplies and all cargo, and any modifications or accessories added by you or the dealer after it leaves the factory. Use the GVWR for the trailer if you are unsure how much it will weigh loaded (just to be safe).

The GVWR of the 2013 201IKSS is 6536 pounds.

Specs on your truck worst case (a 3.15 rear end and no MAX TOW package - different from the tow package) show it can tow 8400 pounds minimum with your engine. just be alert for the 13,000 pound maximum combined weight rating in the worst case (regular tow package).

Would also need to know WB and if you have the HD payload package to determine what the max your truck can weight (it is also on your door post).

The tow rating with just the information given could be anywhere from 5300 lbs. (Harley Davidison Edition) to 11,300 depending on wheelbases and final drive ratios.

Dry weight shouldn't be listed in my opinion. Just watch GVWR.

photobill, if it has the factory tow package, you are probably fine.
with the 5.4 and the tow package, you should have plenty of tow capacity left over.

Please do the MATH....... Be kind to your truck and safe for your family and friends and others on the road . Also most important as well. will your truck stop under normal conditions and in an emergency with the total combined weight of TV and camper ? Don't turn your trip into a WHITE KNUCKLE NIGHTMARE
.

Best way to know this answer is to load your tv up with all passengers, gear, and pets plus a full tank of fuel and go weigh it at your local truck scales (Catscale.com). Take that weight and subtract it from your tv gcwr to get the adjusted towing capacity. Take the scaled weight and subtract it from the tv gvwr to get your available payload. The loaded tongue weight needs to be less than the available payload.

as stated before use the trailer gvwr to do your calculations as you will never tow a dry or unloaded tt. Most people tend to add between 1000 and 1500 lbs , you could be more or less but you don't know so the safest thing to do is calculate at max load or trailer gvwr. The loaded tongue weight should be between 13-15% of the loaded trailer weight. In this case figure 13-15% of trailer gvwr. Keep your weights below these numbers and you should be fine. Don't forget to get a good wdh with integrated sway control like the reese dual cam or equal-i-zer. Happy hunting.

We towed our 233s with a 2004 f150 5.4l over 6,500 miles this summer through glacier nat'l park, Yellowstone, and all points between and our truck and camper did fine. No auto sway control, but we did have wdh and add on sway.

I shared a few posts about our "adventures with Rooby" on this site that shed some light on what we experienced.
