Silly Question

Can I leave my WDH hooked up to the camper? Or do I have to take it all apart everytime?

Do you mean if you disconnect your tow vehicle from the trailer ?? On most WDHs, you just need to remover the spring bars, and everything else stays in place. Not exactly sure if that is what you are asking.

i keep the hitch head connected to my TV's receiver. i just take the bars off and put them on the tongue.
some leave the head w/ball, still connected to the tongue. but it's not easy pulling the "stinger" of the hitch head, out of the TV's receiver, while it's still connected to the trailer.

If you are talking about just pulling the pin on the receiver and driving off, DON'T! It's under spring loaded pressure and can cause damage and/or injury. Not sure what else you could mean.

I mean after taking the bars off the WDH, can I leave the ball piece attached to the camper and take the pin out of the receiver and move the TV forward.

Yes, this is pretty much what I was wondering. That hitch head is a heavy mother trucker and I'm a wimp.

Why don't you leave the hitch on the tow vehicle? I only take it off during a very long weekend if we are going to be out and about with the truck. I have a locking pin to keep it secure otherwise.

Ditto. I put denim from a jeans pant leg over the ball to keep the grease under control in case I brush up against the ball. I also cover the ends of the spring bars when I store them stretched across the tongue when not in use.

You could probably do that, but then you would have to remove it from the camper and re-install it to the receiver when you wanted to hitch up again anyway.

i tried that once, just to see if it would work. NOT!

not only was it difficult to pull the stinger out of the truck's receiver, but it was worse trying to back into it, to hook up.

Its like threading the needle backing into it that way and is way way beyond my towing abilities.

If you leave them in for any length of time they rust in place. There is a YouTube video of a guy trying to pull it out by tying it to a tree with truck chains. Pretty funny video until his helper decides to hit it with a sledge while under tension.

This would be more trouble than it is worth, eventually you will have to lift it again because trying to line up with the trailer will be nearly impossible. Unhook the trailer by uncoupling the ball from the trailer and leave your hitch connected to the truck as Mtnguy states.

Dont do it. Uncouple the trailer and then remove the hitch if needed. Yes, you can do what you are thinking of doing, but it will be a headache to get it back in.

Easy hockeytownmom! Once you ask a question you have to let the answers roll in. Others are responding or giving their opinions not only for your benefit but for the other members contemplating or experiencing the same.
