Struggling awning motor, 23IKSS
When retracting the awning, motor starts to struggle when there is only a couple feet left to retract. If I'm looking at the arrangement properly, the motor is in the outside edge of the awning? Is there a lubrication point?
Thanks.

We had a similar issue, turned out to be a faulty ground.

Any idea where the ground point was faulty?

Not really, we took it in to the dealership (it was still under warranty). I know after we got her back we found some sandpaper they left behind in the battery box on the tongue, so probably somewhere up front and underneath?

Lube the Awning Arms
How old is your RV? I have had that happen when the awning is about 75-80% closed. I spray white grease in the moving joints it frees right up for 12-18 months.

Read on another forum that spring tension may need to be adjusted.

What year is your trailer? The awning is made by Dometic and has a 2 year warranty.

It's a 2016, but I'd prefer not to haul in for warranty if I can fix myself.
Where's the grease points? Not obvious where there would be friction.
How is tension adjusted?
Thanks.

Lube Point
On my awning I did the arms where the pins go through from the larger outer u bar to the inner u bar. Can you hear and rubbing or grinding type nose. By the way, several years ago I had my struggling to close that last bit and turned out to be a bad motor. Expensive to replace. I hope that's not your problem. If I remember correctly it's like 5 or 600 dollars for a new motor.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot.
Is there a way to manually override the motor if it totally craps out? I could see that as a crisis if the awning were stuck open and we needed to hit the road...

Manual Retract
Mine is Dometic. You need a ladder to get to the top. Pain in the neck process. see following instructions
AWNING Emergency Retract Procedure
SECTION 7
To Manually Close Awning:
· 7.1 Slide the pull strap (provided) into the utility slot of the FRTA. See FIG. 7.1.
· While one person is holding onto the pull strap, remove the bolt in the top of the right top casting.
· The FRTA will roll in once the bolt is removed.
· Walk the awning to the closed position. See FIG. 7.1.
· Align hole where bolt was removed and drive bolt back into top casting to secure awning.
· Bolt must be reinstalled to prevent awning from opening during travel.
Have awning serviced by a Dometic Service Center or a qualified service technician before attempting to open awning after this procedure has been performed.

x2 on this.
I took the cover off the awning motor and sprayed all the gears with white grease. Working like it should now.

Also keep in mind when you say 'struggling' (we have no way of knowing) that right at the point of the last 20% of closure, the motor is working the hardest due to the arm angle against the pneumatic shock.
All of my electric awnings have sounded slightly different right at that point, either going in or out. Struggling to the point of barely going in or out is of course, different.

Oh, this is definitely struggle. I've had the unit since new and this is a recent issue to pop up. It slows to a crawl in last couple feet and has a slight grinding noise.
I'll open it up and lubricate all moving parts this weekend. I assume the cover removal is self explanatory?

I thought my awning was struggling also until I went to the manufacturer's spec's and it said it should take around 35 seconds to retract the awning. I timed it and it was dead on 35 seconds.
