Surface Rust?

Was just out trying to put the new registration tag on the Roo and noticed some spots of surface rust on the bumber and stabilizer jacks. Then I decided to climb underneath and noticed a ton of rust on the frame and axle cross bars .

Is this normal ?

I mean the trailer has been sitting out on the lot for 2 months in the elements, but it seems strange that a new trailer would have this much surface rust on it.

Mine was like that from new and I attributed it to the it being parked near roadways where salt is used. I did try to sand most of it and sprayed with rustoleum paint. Helps a bit but the surface rust returns. I do live near the ocean too. Woudln't want to change that, so I guess I have to continue to live with salt in the air.

Would it have been towed in the winter on salted roads? It doesn't take long for road salt to rust a trailer.

It was delivered to RVW in mid-Jan so it was likely towed over salted roads. It just seemed strange that new, painted steel beams would be rusty that quick. I'll chalk it up to "normal" wear. Thanx all.

You should probably do what Rugged said and give it a good hosing off underneath or the salt will keep working on the metal.

We took delivery of our 2012 Rockwood 2608WS on January 11. The frame and trailer hitch had rust spots on them. This is our fourth Rockwood and the paint on this frame is the poorest. Of course, it didn't help any when we drove on highways that were wet and still had salt on them from an earlier snow storm on our way to Florida.

I picked up my newly ordered Roo 233S in October, and it has been in the Phoenix (AZ) area since... I have rust on the frame also. I need to get underneath and check out the full extent while it is still under warranty. My trailer has never yet been exposed to salty roads or Ocean air.

Was it parked on grass. This will also cause frame rust.

I'm no scientist but I assume it has something to do with the moisture and oxygen given off by the grass.I do know from experience that if you park a vehicle on grass it will cause it to rust and the lower the vehicle is,the more rusting you will have.

By far the best stuff out there for protecting metal surfaces. Better than WD40 the fluid film stuff stays on the metal for a long time. Quick and easy to use sprays on and stays there.

I'm in the CG, so I'm near water most of the time. We use this stuff on our trailers and it works great.

Unfortunately I will be parking on grass, so I'll look into applying some of the Fluid Film or Gempler's. Thanx for the info.
