Can't beat the Progressive Industries emc. Many have done the hardwired, like me. I pulled the power panel and mounted it to that. Big concern is the 30 amp cord. Very thick and stiff. Some like the portable. Gives you more options when you resell your camper. Dealer is not going to give you anything for mods. I like the HW display inside. Nice to see what's going on. especially as you power on equipment inside you can watch the amperage creep up. So when it says 26 amps and you're about to push that microwave button, you can think twice.

Progressive Industries PT30C 30 Amp Portable Electrical Management System https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003AL23TC..._P44txbCFQC9Q0

So this would be a good choice?

Campgrounds are generally safe, but are these things high theft items? Is it possibly to use the portable version inside the trailers utility area, rather than at the power post?

Chain it to the post with the included metal lock tab.

The portable unit is a good option as it can be used as a hardwired unit. The hardwired unit installed with plugs also gives you the option to remove it or bypass it if the need arises. I purchased the hardwired unit EMS HW30. It is a little over 200 dollars and install wasn't bad - about an hour and a half.
