We travelled to Caprock Canyons State Park for an incredible visit. We stayed 4 nights, arrived Saturday, departed Wednesday.
The trip to Caprock Canyons took a bit more than 11 hours. We were traveling with another family pulling their highwall popup, so it is safe to say that we stopped at least one more time than what we needed. That didn't slow us down as much as the winds! We faced some really strong winds that forced me to drive around 45-50 for several miles. I just wasn't comfortable driving any faster than that given I'm still a newbie.
We made it to Caprock and set up camp Saturday afternoon. We had chili for dinner. Couldnt have come at a better time! While the temps weren't cold (yet), the wind continued to howl. None of the adults slept during the night, but at least the kids did. I heard we had close to 40mph sustained winds at times. That was a long, long night!
We went horseback riding at around 10 Sunday morning. It was quite cold out given the wind was still blowing. Once we started riding down the canyon, the temps were quite comfortable!
We finished the day off with some easy mountain biking and a great dinner - chicken and beef fajitas with all the fixins. The grill worked out quite nicely, and can't wait to cook fajitas again.
Monday was spent by traveling roughly 2 hours away to visit Palo Duro State Park for the day. Simply beautiful! We did some hiking, then riding around, then more hiking. We worked up a good appetite and visited Big Texan Steak House - home of the 72 oz steak! While I didn't attempt the "free meal" contest, me and my buddy did order the biggest cut of steak we thought we could eat...a 24oz ribeye. Mission complete! I was now ready for the nice ride home
We set out to do some mountain biking on our last full day at Caprock Canyons. We headed down the canyons - what a blast that was! Unfortunately in these parts, what goes down must come up! I found out exactly how out of shape I am!
Given that we were under a wood fire ban given the high winds throughout our stay, we were able to burn charcoal. So we did just that! We enjoyed a simple meal of hamburgers and hotdogs. Good times!!!!
The ride home was uneventful - exactly what I want.
At any rate, our third trip was an outstanding one. Can't wait for the next adventure.
