Towing 233s, Dodge Durango
Could I please get some thoughts on towing a 233s with a 14' or newer V8 Durango. I would like to go to the 233 but I might feel more comfortable towing the 19. I know the 233 loaded will be about 77% of max towing of durango, under the max tounge weight. All the numbers work, but would you take a 10 hour trip with this set up. Does anyone have personally experience? Not Buying A Truck

The Durango will have no problem towing the 233s at all, as long as you have the towing package, it has a v8 hemi engine with TONS of horsepower. It will tow that camper just fine, I would spend 3-4 weeks traveling with that package. I am just a retired Porsche/Audi Technician so what do I know, LOL Go for it!

What's your payload? Yellow sticker in the drivers side door, to me this is the most important thing!!!!!
How many people will you have in the truck? You will be using a WDH, correct?
Isn't torque more important then horsepower when towing?

Don't have personal experience with your potential setup. I pull an ikss with a Ram1500 and would not tow with anything less. I tried pulling it 5 miles across town with my wife's 2008 Durango and didn't like the experience. Less power, less brake, shorter wheelbase. Won't do it again.
As far as your rig, a 233 is lighter than an ikss so it just may be possible. Looking at the numbers, the payload will be the limiting factor. Total payload is 1400-1600 lbs. Dry tongue weight is 660 per brochure. Add min 100 for camping ready trailer. Only leaves 600 or so for occupants and cargo. Hopefully you don't have high school tackles in your family. Good luck.

Thank you all for your replies. As I mentioned without typing to much the weights work out ok, what I would like to hear is more personal experience. As an example. My last setup was a 4000lb trailer fully loaded pulling with a jeep grand Cherokee with tow package rated at 5000lb. Thats 80% of max. I would not recommend that setup to anyone.

Just to clarify, there's the 233 AND the 233S.
FR dropped the 233 model only a year or two ago.
So the 233 would be much lighter, than the 233S.

I am using a WD hitch and I ask about the 2014 our later durango because of the 8 speed transmission.

I don't know the weights of the 233, but we don't even have the hemi in our durango and have no problems with towing our 195bh. We have the tow package and use a WDH.

My experience is that with passengers and Cargo in the Durango you will be over gross weight. Plenty of power but if I have anybody in the back seat I am over the weight rating for the tow vehicle but under the gross combined weight.

My gross vehicle weight is 6600 and I am at 5800 with a full tank, me and my wife, hitch and tools. So with a tongue weight of 800 I am at exactly 6600 with no margin for passengers.

Our trailer is at 7300 with cargo but we haul dry. We have plenty of margin on the hitch but our transmissions is only good to 7300 because we have 3.53 to 1 gear ratio.

I tow a 28 ft Rockwood TT that weighs 6700 # loaded with a 750 tongue weight with 2014 Durango. I am close to weight limits and I do not have problems. I use a Blue Ox WDH and keep speeds under 65 MPH. No problems in 7000 miles of towing. I did change the Durango tires for higher speed and load limits which gave me stiffer sidewalls and less TV movement.

I picked up my new 233S yesterday and towed it with 2013 Ford Explorer XLT V6. It felt it but pulled it down the highway fairly well.

I have a 233s and pull it with a 2012 Durango Citadel V-8 with tow package. I have no problem at all with this setup. The hemi has a ton of power.

I pull a wildwood 27rkss. 33 ft long. TV is a grand Cherokee with Hemi. Loaded to go it's roughly 6800 lbs. max tow weight for the jeep is 7400. I'm right at limits for total cargo, tongue weight on jeep but so far absolutely no issues. Trailer sits level if not an inch high at hitch. I use a blue Ox WDH.

Thank you all for your replies. I thought I might get a lot of negative replies making my choice of the 19 easier. No I have to consider the 233s some more.

I have a 1999 Dodge Durango V8 Magnum with towing package that has been towing the 2013 233s Roo for a couple years now and a 3500 lb rockwood HW 276 since 2007. It will do fine despite the age of mine now is having problems getting up hills . Guess they can't last forever.
