23IKSS and Towing

Greetings to the board.

I have some experience in this matter. I own a 2013 F150 Crew Cab, 3.5 Ecoboost. 5.5 bed. XLT model, I have 1401 lbs of payload. I purchased a 2016.5 (old floor plan) 23IKSS Roo and I bought a Sherline hitch scale.

RV place said 550 lbs for tongue weight, maybe in another dimension. I usually run about 700 - 750 tongue weight. I carry about 25 gallons of fresh water (most aft tank on 23IKSS). I have jockeyed my storage around to where I'm at 700 - 725 tongue weight, even with a battery and full LP tanks.

So, subtracting 750 from 1401, that is what you get to put into the truck. Stuff in the bed and PEOPLE. Wife, 2 grandsons and me, that is 600-650. Max payload. I truly take my time loading the trailer and I weight the tongue every time.

Close friend has a 2015 Aluminum F150, 3.5 ecoboost, Crew cab, 5.5 bed. his payload is 1928 lbs.

BTW, integrated trailer brakes and I usually drive 63-67 mph. I get 8 MPG towing the Roo.

I bought the truck WITHOUT doing homework. Long Story. But I'm looking for a 3/4 ton, probably diesel. Not to specifically tow the Roo, to do some construction and such and tow Mr. Roo as a bonus.

Oh, Blue Ox tow hitch. 1000 lbs bar, 10000 hitch.

This configuration tows nice. In fact, from Indy to Frankenmuth last year (July) bad judgment, no appreciable trailer brakes and it still handled like a dream. 60-65 mph, very little traffic.

Drive smart, look at payload, check tires, adjust hitch, load trailer.

I'm off the soap box.

Scott

Get the US made 4pt Equal-i-zer, not the overseas made E2.
I recommend the 1000k/10000k version.

I have the Curt round bar 800 lbs (part Number 17001) with Curt Swing control and it is working fine for 6000 miles so far.
I did had to fine tune it after the dealer set it up in order to get the best results though.
I used the information on the following links for my education, the selection of the wd and fine tuning:

X2. The equalizer website has a calculator for determining the E4 hitch size. I'd guess with your true tongue weight you'll need the 1000k/10000k as bikendan has indicated...

I have the E 2 as previously stated. I have 800 lb bars with 8000 lb total.
This is my first camper requiring a WDH, others being pop ups, so I went with the recommendation of the dealer as to what size to get. I asked about an E4 and they said they would put on whatever I wanted, it would just cost more.
After 3 seasons of towing, I can't say why you would need any more than a E2 unless you are planning for a bigger camper in the future. It's always been a comfortable, stable tow. Granted, I have never used a E4. Maybe it would be even better.

I use the Andersen WDH, It works really well and is very easy to use.

Haven't read all posts, but as you check things out look up towing capacity for the individual makes on the web. Most manufacturers have towing charts for each year of make. Be sure & look at the axle ratings as well as the motor. This will help determine towing ability.
