I have a 3" foam topper on my front bunk, a 2" for the rear, plus DW made a set of fitted sheets. I am able to fold both mattresses and close both ends without removing anything.

Do you fold the mattress with the topper enclosed in it? We tried once to close our rear bunk end with the 3" topper and it seemed as if we were forcing it to close, so we were afraid to push it any further.

yes, I haven't removed the topper since installing it last year. It doesn't close so tight that I'm worried about stressing any parts. My wife works the inside to help pull things closed while I make sure nothing gets pinched against the outside seals.

I'm looking to extend the mattresses on each side with some type of added cushion. Not that the factory mattresses don't work, I'm just tired of the space from the end of the mattress to the edge of the cabinets. That edge is mighty sharp and has scrapped several shins on either the way in or the way out of bed. I figure by extending the mattress with additional cushion, I can avoid all the scrapped shins, but also extend the life of the edge trim. Has anyone thought of this? Or has anyone made this mod that can spare a few ideas?

Do you have the gel memory foam toppers or just regular foam?

I wonder if that might be why we had so much resistance when trying to close the bunk end with the foam topper still on the bed. We bought the 3" gel memory foam, which I believe is much denser (and heavier) than the regular foam. I may buy the regular foam for the other bunk end and see if that makes a difference. Thanks for answering my questions!

We use blow up mattresses on ours.

So far the "queen" mattress in the bedroom is comfortable enough to use alone, but the bed and couch conversions need something so we just top them with the blow up mattresses.

Can just deflate in place and fold up if needed.

Given one a try?

Ask and ye shall receive

Self explantory but pics show front bunk with fitted sheets and the 3" solid foam topper, and rear bunk with the cheaper 2" egg-crate foam version. Have driven thousands of miles closed up like this w/o any issue.

We have slept on blowup mattresses in our tent. They are pretty comfortable, but they can get chilly sometimes. Plus they are kind of bouncy. I can't even feel my DH when he turns over on the gel foam. With an air mattress, you kind of feel every move the other makes. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Thanks for the pics Force! Will definitely show these to DH and we will try it the next time out. Sure beats unmaking the bed and hauling the heavy topper off the bed onto the dinette every time we break camp! Will let you know how it goes!
