On most 1/2 tons payload becomes the limiting factor. There should be a sticker on the driver side door column that shows the maximum available payload for the vehicle. This will be the max amount of weight available for all passengers, cargo/luggage, user added options and pin weight the truck can carry. It is usually a lot less than people expect it to be.

We bought the lightest 5th wheel trailer Forest River makes. By the time we load us and our coats, cameras, tripod, water bottles, tool bag, and a lunch-size cooler into our Ram 2500 4x4 crew cab, we are nearly maxed out on payload. That payload has to include the 5th wheel hitch (not light) in addition to the "wet", not "dry" (as shown in all the sales brochures), pin weight of the trailer. And our payload is certainly greater than that of a Ram 1500.
But our Cummins diesel would have no trouble towing a 35-ft., 12,000-lb. GVWR travel trailer!

I own a 2014 Ram 1500 (Hemi) and used it to pull my Rockwood 8280WS fifth wheel after purchase and a couple of very local campgrounds. I can tell you even with watching weight added in fifth wheel and TV I was over payload. There was nothing fun about pulling through the hills and I was literally exhausted as well as relieved when I arrived at a CG. I was very lucky to find a 2005 Ram 3500 with super low miles (34K) and I got a pretty good deal on it. Believe me, I couldn't afford to buy another truck before purchase of fifth wheel and thought I could pull the 5er' with my every day 1500 but after a few trips I crunched and was able to find a sweet deal.

Just my opinion, any 5er over about 7,000 pounds dry is OVER WEIGHT to be half ton towable SAFELY
Not what the specs say, but going down the road.
Just my opinion.

I no longer pull with it because it was unsafe. I now pull with this.

Great!
The squat you had on those pics scared the crap out of me.
But I wasn't driving it.
As I said to each their own.

I like the idea of our "1/2 ton towable" behind our 3/4 ton. Makes for a very comfortable drive. I don't like the flimsy feeling of our "ultra-lite" trailer though....it's just another of life's trade-offs.

We noticed that you pull a Rockwood with a newer GMC. We were wondering how you get it to tow level. Is the 3/4 ton truck a diesel 4 wheel drive?

What's your Ram's payload capacity, from the driver's door yellow sticker?
It says "Occupants and cargo should not exceed xxxxlbs"
Few 1/2 trucks have enough payload for 5th wheel pin weights.
And Rams are notorious for having lousy payload capacities.
