40 foot 5rs in campgrounds

Do those of you with 40 foot fifth wheels have trouble finding campgrounds that will allow the big campers? I have heard anything over 38 feet is a problem.

We just bought a 40' 5er... my research prior to purchase found that you will have a hard time in some of the old state / national parks. Most RV resorts are no problem... the older ones will have some sites big enough, but more limited on availability.

you can find them, just not in as many places. You might be using the big rig pull thru sites more often too. Plan on paying more for larger sites in most cases.

I have a TT that measures over 35' hitch to bumper. With my tow vehicle attached, my overall length exceeds 54'. Finding campsites can be a challenge but if you call ahead, sometimes they may have some sites that you can fit into even if you exceed their advertised maximum length. One campground I'm going to in June has an advertised maximum length of only 28'. The allowed me to reserve 2 back to back sites to accommodate the size of my rig.

When in doubt, give the campground office a call and perhaps they can work with you.

At 42', we rarely have a hard time finding spaces in *RV Parks*.

Where we have issues is with state and national campgrounds. But we fit some.

We are in our second season with our 40ft 5er. Like others have mentioned, sites are out there but not as numerous as 30 and 36 foot sites. Another consideration too it that a 5er is considerably taller than a TT which can create headaches in older, forested parks. We have found that we have to be very preemptive and make reservations very early to insure we get a site that we want and that we will fit into. RV resorts are always an option and we have stayed at a few of them. Even in some resorts like Frontiertown at Ocean City, what they call a 40 foot site is tight leaving you wondering where to park your TV. The Villages at Turning Stone, they have hundreds of 45 foot blacktopped sites... Our local KOA is site specific and the staff picks the best site for you according to their tastes, not fond of this, but by doing this they don't have a 12' pop-up in a 40 plus site. Most state campgrounds have a handful of "big rig" sites but you may need to be very good at backing up your unit to make them work. They also quite often have a few reserved "management sites" that can't be reserved online that they can use to fit in units that won't fit elsewhere.

I worked a campground for the Corp of Engineers none of the campsites were set up to handle anything that big. Some of the more popular campgrounds on the lake could but not the one I was at.

I was in a 50' the two on either side were 35'

It really depends on the campground. Here in Florida, we primarily stay in our beautiful state parks. Some of the older parks were really only set up to accomodate tents...for instance, Myakka River State Park...a beautiful park with three campgrounds, two of which have smaller sites and would present a problem for larger rigs. However, many SPs are beginning to address this problem...Myakka recently created one of its campgrounds specifically to accomodate the larger RV. Call ahead...park personnel should always be able to "steer" you in the right direction.

We.just got.back from 2 1/2 weeks in Arkansas. We had no problems with our 42' 5er. State parks and a couple of private cgs.

I am on my second 40'+ fifth wheel. Never had a problem at all getting a spot.

As was mentioned, state parks may be smaller but with reserveamerica, it shows how long each spot is at a park so you know what you're getting beforehand.

During the last 74 days I have gone from Maryland to the Florida Keys and back with my 40 ft 5th wheel. We are now at Pocahontas State Park in Virginia. Have had no problems finding a place to say.

We have a 37 foot Wildcat and half of state parks were a very tight fit. They were built when everyone had a 24 foot bumper pull. If You come in on a weekend and the CG is full , it's even harder to park. The private CG 's were about 50/50 too.
