5er users with experience?
I am asking for info to share with my buddy about 5th wheel hitches. He has a 3500HD dually with a 8 foot bed. This truck is a beast and setup with every towing/suspension option he has ever seen.
Having said that, he is thinking about buying a 43 foot toy hauler this week. He is kind of cavalier about what hitch he will buy, thinking it should be around $1,600.
My question is what kind of things should he consider before hand? You may know the pitfalls, I do not. Personally, I would not like to spend money only to find out that money should have been put towards something else.

Not knowing pin weight or trailer weight, I would suggest the 20k pullrite. I have the reese 15k for my current fiver and I get a fair amount of chucking. I understand the pullrite is smoother. For that length bed, he does not need a slider hitch.

Just asked. He says dealer is offering him a Demco 21K.
Had to edit, Pin weight 3610.

I know that is huge pin weight. He has been running with a 4K slide in camper for years (big pig, need's it own wheels and motor).
He tells me the 5th wheel weight loaded is 20K.

Put shocks on the trailer and take the slop out of the hitch legs.

Then bump the pullrite to the sir super series or Reese 24k signature series.
What dually does he have? IIRC dodge rams with factory installed hitch rails are limited on what hitches they can use.

Part of my issue could have been the stripped out frame screw that caused the bowed hitch plate.

IMO, one of the best hitches on the market are the B&W hitches. Empty bed when not towing, easy installation/removal, and no slop in the hitch. I've yet to figure out how to mis-hitch it to be able to drop my fifth wheel (not that I want to- but I'm a big dummy and worry about that).

I have had 4 different hitch's in the last 38 years, and have a B&W hitch now and like it the best, I have had it for the last 10yrs. You pull it out of the truck and there is no rails or pins or anything, and you have the turn over ball to haul a stock trailer if you need too.

X3 on the B&W. I pulled it out of my F350 and dropped it into my new GMC 3500 Dually. It's a fantastic hitch made by a great company.

The b&w guys need to try the Hensley.
Besides the flat floor, there's no difference between b&w and the rest of the solid hitches.
What could be better, than air bags and shocks on the hitch head?
The trailer just floats.
No jerking, chucking, banging...

The biggest advantage to the bw, is the flat floor.
Although, with the newer fifth wheel prep pucks, you can have a flat floor too!

For me it's the B&W ball over paired with Andersen Ultimate Aluminum hitch. Weigh 32#, rated to tow almost any 5er, no chucking, no slop, no grease, a complete system. Easy to adjust height, priced around $600 for hitch, around 800 for ball over. The ball and receiver have low friction coating, so no grease, did I say 32#.

If the unit gross is 20K my thinking is not to get a hitch rated less than 24k.
Never hurts to be safe.

This is what I got as well. Rated for 4500 pin weight and 24k total trailer weight.
