I came home from a trip today. While unloading I noticed that the 2 tires on one side were nearly touching each other. I crawled under the trailer and saw the broken spring. I have no idea where or when it broke but am very grateful that I made it home without a catastrophic failure.
Looks like the bottom leaf has been broken for a long time. The top three look like they just sheared right off. Must have been a huge amount of force to do that.
We left for the trip on 7/31, it wasn't broken the day before when I adjusted the brakes and replaced the adjusting hole dust plugs with new ones. Technically, there is nothing to break the upper leafs in the pack if the bottom leaf breaks first.

I would agree...that bottom leaf has been broken for quite some time judging by the rust. Unless Im mistaking that bottom leaf sitting on the axle cradle for a spacer. Looks like a 4 leaf spring...or is it just a 3 leaf?
my mistake on last comment regarding other springs breaking. The bottom leaf is just very small and is identical to the other 3. It's a 4 leaf, 3000 lb spring on a 6000 lb axle.
