Started with a Heathkit I built, then a Halicrafters CB3A and then a Citifone 23 channel and lastly a Cobra.

Still screw the antenna onto the roof mag-mount when we go on the road and listen for road conditions ahead (along with "the color").

Don't use it here in town.

I had a ranger rci 2950 at one Time. Converted to show regular cb channels and juiced a bit. Best radio I ever owned. A noise cancelling mike and a firestick antenna I think, and on occasion I could really get out there. More than a few of my traveling freinds occasionally asked who I was talking to.

Back atcha' Les!

First CB was a Lafayette HE-20a. Tunable or crystal-controlled receiver, but only four channels (select your crystals) transmit! We lived with it!

My DW and I were officers in the first, all military CB Club out of Mayport Fl. called The Defenders. Met some real nice people, installed radios & antennas as a side job. My base was Pierce Simba SSB, talked all over mainly skip talk. Still have radio but not hooked up.

Ham radio here. You can hit a repeater from most anywhere, so getting assistance or for emergencies is easy. Even without repeaters a range of 15+ miles is typical. Frequencies are always open/available. Super for 2 or more RV's traveling together.
Need a license, but a couple days of study is no problem. Dash mount radios are more expensive than CB (but multitudes better). However handhelds (walky talkies) are available new for under $50 that again are far better than CB's and still have plenty of power and not much bigger than a cell phone. VERY seldom will you hear anyone on the highway with you, and it is difficult to get any road info. (I have a decal on the back of my RV "146.52 and (my call sign) AI4SR". In thousands of miles of driving never got a call. For talking to traveling companions, FRS radios are by far the best. Plenty of range (1 TO 3 MILES in the RV) and 5+ outside. Small as a cell phone so great outside in the campground, sightseeing or shopping. I just don't consider CB as usable at all anymore.
