Yet, that would require lower profile tires, usually decreasing load rating

Forgive my ignorance but with only 900 lbs. of payload I think you will be over the truck ratings.

Go at least 3/4 ton, diesel. Pick the brand you are most comfortable with. Go to a size that will handle your next 5er as you will probably have the truck when you upgrade.

Here is my take...if you only use the truck a couple times a year for towing, you probably can get buy without a diesel. When we bought our V10 F250 I knew the truck would sit for a couple of weeks at a time and unless towing would only get used for taking pakages 3 miles to the post office....not good for a diesel to run short trips. After 15 years our maintenance has been oil changes every few thousand miles and servicing the transmission about every 30,000

For occasional towing, the F150 with max tow and max payload seems like a winner.

If you are going to tow quite a lot and drive it daily more than a few miles, go with the diesel if you can afford it. If you do, go with a one ton so you payload is not compromised, especially if you get a heavy pin weight 5er down the road. I have had good luck with the Ford but have heard their new diesel is not too reliable. If Toyota ever came out with a HD diesel that would be my choice. My 92 Toyota p/u has 460,000 miles on it and I just took a 500 mile trip.

I was at a party last week and met a guy who works for a diesel
shop he sounded pretty up to par on his knowledge of the diesel trucks.
he said if he was going to buy a daily driver he would go with a chevy as they ride better and they have quieter ride , if your going to buy a truck for nothing but pulling buy the Dodge /Cummings,as they will out last under heavy pulling, then he said if they could put a ford body on the dodge frame, axles, and motor they would have a great truck as he said that was the ford frame and axles were weakest of the three
he said the ford are the worst to work on and the most expensive to fix he said look at the difference in size of the fuel injectors between the Cummings and the power stroke he said the power stroke are huge with a huge price tag
so they all have there qualities
depends what you like and what your looking for

And thats with 15in tires, by the time you add the weight of the 20in wheels and tires.

Are you currently pulling the 8000 pound FW now with that setup, sorry but I don't see how thats even possible.

Having spent the bulk of my career working for a Detroit Diesel - Allison distributor (with the last few years working for a Cummins distributor), in a perfect world, I would opt for the Allison transmission with a Cummins engine. However, since no one offers that package, I would narrow the choice to a Ram/Cummins or a Chevrolet/Allison/Duramax. I would go with at least a 2500HD and take a hard look at a 3500 1-ton with single rear tires. The cost differential will be virtually nonexistent with what you're going to pay for a new diesel truck!

Oldtool2: If you're considering a 2015 M/Y diesel engine in a 2500HD or 3500, I would probably have to give the Cummins 6.7L the nod. It's an inline 6 cylinder versus V-8's for Ford or Chevrolet/GMC (fewer parts moving around), has a higher torque rating when coupled with an Aisin transmission, and has cast iron cylinder block and CI heads (versus aluminum heads on the others). Based on my experience managing a fleet of service trucks with Duramax diesels, that would be my second choice. Another significant advantage on the Cummins is that, once it gets out of warranty, should you have an engine performance issue you have the option of taking it to the Cummins engine distributor for service. As a former engine distributor guy, I believe that they offer the very best engine repair.

You might want to also give the guys at the Jasper Engine factory a call and see what their experience has been - although the current vintage product has probably not been out long enough to give a good indication of expected service life.

Since the chassis-engine selection also determines the transmission option, I have no experience with the Aisin transmission as offered in the Ram chassis. The Allison transmission offered in the Chevrolet/GMC is pretty bullet-proof for that application with normal maintenance.

I forgot to add that the Cummins 6BT engine is utilized in a wide variety of automotive, military, marine, and industrial applications - i.e. heavy-duty design, good availability of both OEM and aftermarket parts, wide availability of service outlets (once the engine is out of warranty).

Oldtool2: Be nice for comment as to how you will be using the truck over all. Lots of towing or just lots of general driving. Later RJD

This has nothing to do with what I was asking but sense so many want to question it I will respond.

It is very possible! Before buying this truck took it to a Dodge dealer. He told me the 20 inch were dealer installed He told me it was fine for what I wanted to do with it in every respect. My trailer desler also checked it and said the same.

Now back to what I was asking. To answer another question. Now that I am getting my prosthetic I plan on being on the road quite often, not just a couple of times a year. Looking forward to doing things I haven't been able to do in the past.

Jim

Ok so now you will be doing a lot of traveling with camper. Time to go with diesel and 3/4ton of your choice as you mentioned upgrading to larger trailer. Later RJD

That 900 pounds of payload is for the trailer not the truck, back on point

Well shut me up! Hope the original motor is still in it. It just might need a little front axle weight.
