Good article...
IMO, if I'm shopping the half ton truck market...diesel wouldn't be a consideration, especially when you have the Ecoboost for overall best bang for the buck.

Now if I'm searching the 3/4-1ton truck market, hands down for the diesel for the incredible towing torque compared to the V8's on the market.

X2, I think the same way. That is until Ford ECO-Boosts the 6.2L gas for the 3/4-1ton trucks. That would be fun to drive.

like the second post on the article says...(You can't do cost analysis without including resale value.) buddy just bought a 06 dmax from my friend, paid 26k and it had 68k miles. try that in a 06 or even a 2011 gas truck

I am in the market for a half ton diesel. Even with the spike of diesel in the Northeast, I won't go back to gas.

Just look what diesel offerings have been announced since the Ram:
Nissan Titan
Nissan Frontier
Chevy Colorado
Toyota Tundra
Ford F150

I have a F150 with a 6.2. It gets great mileage and has plenty of stuff to pull my Sterling 30RL fifth wheel. . . 411 hp and over 400 ft lb torque. Without wind I get 9 mpg pulling the camper. Empty, I get 16.5 around town and about19 on the highway. I am told that as long as the Ecoboost is under 2000 rpm you can get good mileage, but when the turbos kick in to pull a load, you're well into the single digits. The extra 10 to 12 thousand to buy a F 250 Diesel will never pay back unless you plan to pull a BIG heavy rig. I had a 250 with the V 10. The 6.2 has better performance.

I suggest a one ton coal burner, dual or single wheel drive of your choice.

After owning gassers until my latest truck diesel all the way. More power. Better gas milage. Easy in and out refueling at truck stops. Some say diesel is more expensive and the cost is to high on the truck. But because of the better milage diesel is actually cheaper per gallon. The cost of the truck you will get half of it back when you trade it in. If you tow diesel is the way to go.

I've seen plenty of half tons cost more than I just paid for a new 1 ton diesel. I get 12MPG no problem pulling 38ft 5th wheel. Get almost 20MPG highway when empty. And like already mentioned, diesel resale many times better than gassers.

X2 12 pulling a 35 foot fifth wheel and used to get 8 pulling a travel trailer with a gasser with less weight. I get 25 on the highway which amazes me since my 4 cylinder GMC Terrain only gets 31.

Half ton diesel is still limited by payload. That payload will now be even lower because of the heavier engine.

When Ram releases the half ton diesel I'll definitely be looking into them, the biggest factor for me with diesel is where they make the power, gas is making power between 5-6500 rpm, diesel is making power between 1500-3000 rpm, I like the idea of not having my engine screaming up hills all day. That bieng said I have a 3/4 ton gas that has been pretty good to me for the last 8 years and where its paid for and has nothing wrong with it, the economy is hard to beat!

nothing against a half ton diesel, but its still a half ton. The power and fuel economy is probably better compared to gassers, but no more payload. Hope people don't think they can "settle" for a half ton because its now diesel powered.

1/2 ton will never be comparing to 3/4 ton capability for sure, the new Ecodiesel is rated higher tow capacity than my 06 mega cab though and gets 2x better fuel economy. I think a properly equipped 1/2 ton diesel, 3.92's & lsd with the max tow package and either factory air bags or aftermarket bags would be a very strong contender for my 26' TT @ 6000lbs, especially where gas is almost $1.50cdn a litre where I live and diesel is even more, don't get me wrong though, if I had $65,000 just chilling in my glove box I would be coming home with a new 2014 Ram 3500 laramie 6.7l, lol.

The biggest difference from 1/2 ton to 3/4 and up is not just motor. 3/4 and up have larger trannies, axles, brakes etc. Everything is more heavy duty.

A real bonus to any turbodiesel is the low rpm grunt, making it a real pleasure to drive for those who don't like revving their motors to get somewhere or get the job done.

The EcoBoost is one heck of an engine and makes that aspect comparable to the Diesel but with a fuel economy penalty. Gasoline technology has come a long way but it will never overcome the difference in energy content of the fuel.

When it all comes down to the bottom line, pick the engine you most like to drive and ultimately which one you can afford that will give the best long term value.

My newest truck is a diesel, and I'll never ever go back to gas. The towing is great, and like another said, it makes the truck stops a dream!
