Copied from Wikipedia:

Calgon is a brand registered trademark of different corporations. The original product consisted of powdered sodium hexametaphosphate (amorphous sodium polyphospate), which in water would complex with ambient calcium ion and certain other cations, preventing formation of unwanted salts and interference by those cations with the actions of soap or other detergents. Its name was a combination of the phrase "calcium gone".[1] Originally promoted for general use in bathing and cleaning, it gave rise to derivative products which have diverged from the original composition.

The brands have their origin in Calgon, Inc. of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which first put Calgon water softener on the market in 1933.[2] It was acquired by Merck in 1968 and later broken up and sold off. Calgon was broken into:

I'm travelling in New England this week. In Concord NH I checked @ Shaw's, Market Basket & Hannaford stores & they all had liquid Calgon on the shelves near the bleach. Market Basket had the best price.

The Hannaford store in Wells ME had it as well.

In my neverending quest to find all the stores in Canada & the US that sell Calgon, I have another update.

In Massena NY, both the Wally Mart & Hannaford stores carry the liquid. This may help folks in eastern Ontario/SW Quebec/northern NY looking for it.

If any of you pass through central Virginia, the Krogers have the liquid version in the laundry section.

Our last stop in the US was the Wally Mart in Ogdensburg NY. No sign of Calgon in the laundry detergent section.

As a newbie to all of this- why do you guys want Calgon? I know it softens water; but what is the need in a TT? Is it to make tap water taste better, or is does it help with the plumbing?

The Calgon is used in the "Geo Method". It's a procedure for keeping you black water tank sensors clean & the tank odour free.

The Geo Method

The "Geo method" works to keep your tanks clean and your sensors reading accurately. (As best they can)

Arm and Hammer sells a super wash booster that is about have the price of calgon and does the same basic thing. Also some of the Eco Soaps like Country Save has softeners in them. So if you use the Geo method with laundry soap and calgon, you might try just using a soap and softener in one.

I did find Calgon powder at HEB near San Antonio and in Houston as well as the Arm and Hammer wash booster.

Calgon sighting alert! Wooohooo!

Today we found the 40 oz. box of Calgon Water Softener (UPC 051700204007) at Meijer stores in Grand Rapids. For those of you outside the greater Michigan area, Meijer is a Grand Rapids-based Wal-Mart style super grocery/department store.

Bought two boxes which should last us for a while.
