Finding Calgon
I'm trying to find Calgon in my area, but haven't had any luck. I've also searched the US WallyMart, Kmart & Meijers websites & gotten no results.
I'm going to be down to Indy later in Aug' & was wondering if there were any members from the area that know (have personally bought it) where I can buy Calgon while I'm there?

Sorry Rev
<sigh>
The word is out. DW went to Wal-Mart to buy some for the camper and they were out of stock. Also out of stock at our normal grocery store.
The FBI is going to find some RV'er with seven thousand cases of the stuff in a shipping container in his back yard.

I know its very hard to find the powder form. I have however found the liquid at wallyworld and kmart. Its a short white bottle holds maybe a quart if that. They should put it with the laundry stuff.

It's funny around here (Southern Maryland) its very hard to find the liquid, but the powder is available from several different places.
I just dissolve a cup of the powder in a gallon of hot water, let it cool and dump it in the toilet.

I find powder form in the pharmacy area and liquid in the laundry detergent area at my local Walmart.

Canada Customs nailed a guy recently trying to smuggle chewing tobacco.
Quote:
days ago
A Mississauga man has been convicted in St. Catharines court for trying to smuggle half-a-tonne of chewing tobacco into Canada.
Irfan Vakharia, 33, was trying to cross the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge on Jan. 27 in a commercial truck when he was stopped by border officials, according to a release.
The Mississauga man told officials he had no personal goods to declare, but was later observed throwing cases from the back of his truck into a snow bank.
The cases held 500 kilograms of chewing tobacco worth about $40,000.
On July 16, Vakharia was convicted of attempting to smuggle under the Customs Act. He was fined $5,500 and received a six-month prison sentence to be served conditionally as house arrest.

St. Catharines Standard
They're referring to half a metric tonne, which converts to 1100 pounds. I think most chew is sold in 3 oz packages, so he must've had a full load.

water softener salt
I've been using water softener salt.
a 50 pound bag is about $4. Yes you have to dissolve it but that really doesn't take long.

I'd be concerned about corroding the sensors in the tank, not that they work reliably though.

It's hard to think of anything more corrosive than urine.
I doubt that adding salt to the mix will make much difference.

My question is: Exactly what is the salt supposed to accomplish ?? That is not the same as Calgon. It is my understanding that water softener salt is only used to regenerate the resin in a water softener system.......salt by itself does not soften water. Like Charlie, I would be concerned about the salt corroding the sensors. KyDan brings up a good point about urine being salty, but not to the concentration of putting straight salt into the tank.

Ditto. Salt does not make water soft. It just makes it salty.
A soft water system uses salt water to extract calcium and other mineral from hard water (regeneration). You can't get soft water just by adding salt.
Calgon is the only way to go if you want soft water in your RV

Not Salt! OMG totally not good.
Water softener is not salty. Its a liquid that makes water "slippery"
You can not drink water treated with Calgon. It is normally ONLY used for pre-treating hard water to wash clothes.
It may very well be toxic to drink as it binds the minerals in the water into suspension.
SALT is only used in water softener systems to back flush the resin column tank. IT does not soften the water in a softener system; the resin column does. Salt is used to maintain that system.
I highly recommend you stop using any kind of salt in your tanks.

I looked all over as well, finally found it at Wall-mart in the "bath soap" aisle. I actually had to "ask" one of the customer service people to help me. It isn't in the box like it use to be.. It is in a round cylinder container now.. Good luck with the search!

I can only find the liquid. Does anyone know what the liquid equivalent to the powder would be?
