A Mississauga man has been convicted in St. Catharines court for trying to smuggle half-a-tonne of chewing tobacco into Canada.
Irfan Vakharia, 33, was trying to cross the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge on Jan. 27 in a commercial truck when he was stopped by border officials, according to a release.
The Mississauga man told officials he had no personal goods to declare, but was later observed throwing cases from the back of his truck into a snow bank.
The cases held 500 kilograms of chewing tobacco worth about $40,000.
On July 16, Vakharia was convicted of attempting to smuggle under the Customs Act. He was fined $5,500 and received a six-month prison sentence to be served conditionally as house arrest.
They're referring to half a metric tonne, which converts to 1100 pounds. I think most chew is sold in 3 oz packages, so he must've had a full load.
