I've seen folks that use fifth wheel hitch covers when not connected and they want to leave the hitch in the bed. Guess it protects it from the weather.
I rarely take my hitch out of the truck now that we are retired. I see no need for a cover. I oil the moving parts occasionally and it's all good.
I figure if you want to spend $$$ for a cover, that's your business. People spend money on more useless items all the time

I guess it is the same as those who buy grill covers... if it gives you some peace of mind, then go for it.

I've left my hitch in the weather and also under a tonneau cover... never seen any difference in how it operated when needed.

I figured they weren't very popular, or needed. My old Draw-Tite hitch started looking shabby a couple years ago. I asked for new decals to identify the capacity and model. I spray painted the hitch with black Plasti Dip. I am surprised at how nice it still looks. I do take it apart to inspect it. I worry about rust.

I thought about it, but I have always had a tonneau cover anyway, so it never amounted to much thinking. The times between while waiting for a tonneau cover, it was open and no real worries.
