How is your auto insurance?

I have had Geico Auto insurance for about 15 years, so when we bought our new 5er last February we added it to the Geico insurance. Not a bad deal (so I thought) at that time. The Geico is due to renew on July 7. I received a renewed policy from Geico for my insurance earlier this week and I thought the quote seemed a little high so I gave them a call to ask about the increase in my premiums. I was told that I filed a claim in April against my Geico insurance and I had another claim back in November 2011. I told the guy on the phone that I had not had any claims before that or been ticketed in over four years so why would that make my premiums go up so high. Of course he didn't know.
So now here is the kick in the face from the Ugly Galapagos Iguana, not the cute little green lizard that you see on TV.
I was paying $1772 for 6 months for my 2013 Dodge 2500 & a 2012 GMC Arcadia with the 2015 Silverback 5er. Because of the claim in April they now want me to pay............................................... ...........................
.................................................. ............................................
$4098 U.S. Dollars for six months an increase of about 231%.
That is $8196 per year for auto insurance. NO WAY JOSE!!!!

You want to know what the claim in April was for?? I backed into a mail box pole at a friends house. A $1600 claim!

I looked on line at that cute Little Flo's insurance company (Progressive). Looked like a good deal. $1278 for six months for just the auto. Right! So I called them on the phone, they asked who I had had my insurance with. I told him Geico. He said let me put you on hold while he worked on a quote for insurance. When he came back on the phone he said I see you had a claim, so the price will be a little higher that the price you saw on the web site.
Are you sitting down to read this????
Progressive's quote is $3282.15 for six months and that was without the RV. I almost dropped the phone.
Out of desperation I went down to talk to "Farmers" they have my home insurance. The quote from Farmers is within reason $1329 for the two cars and $773 for the 5er RV. And after looking over the coverage from Farmers there is more that I have been getting from the Ugly Galapagos Iguana.
I'm not sure what the moral to this story is, these are just the facts.

Didn't you have an RV claim for a power surge that took out a bunch of electronics in April of so?

Still, that all seems very high, even what you were paying before the claims.
Kind of like I was paying after having been on the same insurance company for many years (nationwide) as they all keep going up every year. Seems you have to change companies every year to get lower rates.
I just changed to Geico and my rate is about $1,000 every six months with 2 cars and a new 40' DP.

Of course a lot of things affect insurance rates. From your rate, I assume you are a teenager.

Yes I had a claim for the power surge in the RV but there was never any mention of it. Just the claim for backing into the mail box.

Luck you don't live in Ontario, after you make a claim you cannot switch for three years, a great example of how corporations control governments not vice-versa.

I pay $2652 a year for a 2015 3500 Denali HD, a 2012 Cruze and a 2015 321 Crusader. Oddly when I added the Crusader it only added about about $450 a year, I think it's lower since we have it on a seasonal site mostly and only take it on the road twice a year.

This has been a couple years back but my best friend had two not at fault small claims & had Farmers Auto (The other persons companies paid the claims both times) & Farmers cancelled him faster than you can turn around.......... after being with them 25 years To say the least it would be the last company I would use for anything........

The Moral is keep shopping around!

Coming originally from the UK, insurance in the USA baffles me just as much as healthcare. For example, I live in N. Florida and when I went to 'Nationwide' for an auto quote they said 'sorry we do not cover your area'. Mmm - so Nationwide is not Nationwide is it ??? - I told them they should change their name - LOL.
I shop around every year for insurance, and I would encourage all of you to do the same - it is amazing how rates and discounts change. Currently I am with Geico and I pay $834.00 for 6 months for my Crusader 295RST 5er, leased 2012 Honda Civic, and 2014 Ram Laramie 2500 6.4L Hemi.
Every few months I get inundated with emails from Progressive, Good Sams etc. promising they can cut my rates but when I get the quotes, so far nobody has beaten the Geico rates.

I have read a lot of threads on this forum over the years about the insurance. I have never heard of rates like you are being quoted.

Based on Gene85222 experience it makes me wonder whether bundling is such a good idea after all. You may get a better price at the front end but if you make a claim then you take a real big hit on everything . I might look at splitting them up (possibly Geico/Progressive for the cars and Good Sams for 5er next time and see how it turns out). At least if you do that then maybe you can minimize your exposure if you have to make a claim on an individual policy???

We had Geico for 30 years..no claims/tickets/etc... but our rates steadily climbed. Called Geico as if we were "NEW" customers and the rates were MUCH lower. When we confronted them about the discrepancy they stated that was how it works...We now have USAA and our rates seem to go down each year, Go figure...

I have Hartford through AARP, I pay$173.00 a month for my 2011 Georgetown 378TS, a 2014 Hyundai Azera, and a 2011 Ford Escape. I pay an additional$70.00 a month for homeowners. Good service, I have had a couple of small claims but never had an increase in premiums. I am 72 and my wife is 71, we have had Hartford for at least 8. years. Recommend them highly. BTW, we live in Southern California.

Give Liberty Mutual a try. We have all insurance, home, auto, (4 vehicles one on full coverage) and RV with them. Had a claim 2 years ago for when a tree branch fell through one of the slides and also a fender bender between our van and a son's truck. Costs 6K/year. We have $1 mil liability on home and auto plus uninsured motorist and medical on the vehicles.

My truck, an 07 1500 crew cab, is insured with Liberty Mutual. For full coverage it is $2500 a year. My trailer, a 32 foot FW, has full coverage with Foremost for $270 a year.

Keep in mind I totaled an RV when a tire blew. Year before I totaled an 07 Jeep and a 28 foot trailer when I rolled it down a hill.

Was thinking about changing the truck insurance but thinking twice about that now !

It looks to me as somebody living in Ontario at the insurance rates being quoted that Auto and RV Insurance fall into the same cost category as Health Insurance in the United States for not very good packages. I pay C$2151 (US$1700 approx) for my household insurance on a condominium, a F150 2013 and my 2015 Rockwood 8060 5th wheel. My health care comes for nothing and I have had two knee replacements this year.

Maybe the US premiums reflect all of the litigation that is widely advertised as beneficial to the consumer on the Interstates has something to do with it?
