Hwy 64 towards Outer Banks NC

Has anybody traveled this way with a fifth wheel. Is there any low bridges or other issue I should know? This is my first time traveling to the coast. Any info.

Its been about three years since I pulled down there. The last time I went we still had out TT so I haven't towed out 5th wheel there yet. From what I remember as long as you stay on 64 to 664 then 168 you will be fine. Just don't let your gps take you off of the main road. There are some low bridges around hampton if you get off of 168 and 664. I just put the route in the good same trip planner and it didn't show anything lower than 13'6. We usually stay at camp hatteras in Rodanthe.

I believe that you are asking about US Route 64 coming east from Raleigh if I am correct. It has been a couple of years since I have traveled that road, but I don't remember any problems. Maybe someone with more current experience could assist you better.

Bignugget is referring to Interstate 64 and getting around Hampton Roads, VA. Good luck, the OBX are a great place to visit.

drive it frequently from Raleigh to the east. 4 and 6 lanes all the way, lots of 18 wheelers, don't think there are any issues.

We travel to OBX about 6 times a year from greenville nc. 64 a straight shot all the way to hwy 12. Once you pass. Columbia you will be on a 2lane section going over alligator river. Depending on the weather the wind can be tough on this bridge. No overpasses other than normal ones on 64. Where are you heading on the island?

Lots of people do the same thing. Especially friends or ours who live in NC and we start talking about taking 64 to get around this or that and they start looking at you like you have 2 heads or something! Very confusing sometimes.

If you look at the US interstate map you do not see an i60. That's because i64 was originally to be i60, but US Route 60 runs almost parallel to it so they changed it to i64. Not to be confused by US Route 64 in NC!!!

Just did it in a class A a few weeks ago. Actually much improved full "interstate like" highway for much of the way now unlike a few years back. Pirateman has it exactly right. You may have to stop for boats going through the Alligator River bridge in June... but smooth sailing otherwise. Enjoy the KOA...

Hwy 64 towards Outer Banks NC

We have been going there for 2years now. We love it there... Lots to do and very nice facilities. This is the koa I am talking about though. Never stayed at camp hatteras, but they are almost next door to each other.

Are the campsites at koa fairly spaced out? Grocery store near by?

The sites are grass with some paved sites in the middle area. There is a good amount of room between. Enough for picnic tables and corn hole, even extra car or two. They had to completely redo this campground after the hurricane year before last.

Just a tip... DO NOT SPEED on US 64 east of Columbia all the way to NC 12. This has ALWAYS been heavily enforced.
