ideas for awning poles

finished installing OC's kit (just the top bracket) and im looking for ideas on poles, can anyone help with pics on what they did?

1" and 1-1/4" elec. pvc. You need to heat about 3" of the 1" with a hair dryer or heat gun and squeeze it down to 1" in a vice to fit in the top bracket.

Have YOU come to right place!!

#1 - Now that you have dry fitted your brackets, bring em on back down, prime and paint, then reinstall.

#2. Follow the diagrams and specs for the do it yourself poles found in the awning thread. OR...

#3. Do the quick and dirty like some of us and use expandable painter poles.

They are light weight.. but not as light as OC's.. cost a fortune more, but they are pretty much ready to paint and install out of the box with just a few modifications such as adding additional height adjustments holes. You'll probably want to add some kind of "foot" (tons of other examples that others use in the thread) to your poles.. and you will want to make sure you have a decent spiral type tie down kit (which is the whole intention of your O.C. brackets).

#4. If you plan to travel with your OC poles in the installed/stored position, you'll need to pick up some D clips. At least for the upper and storage brackets. I use an additional set for the "feet" on mine.

If you DO go another route than the PVC's make sure you make drain holes at the bottom as needed to allow for rain water to exit your poles. There is nothing like retracting your O.C. poles and getting an up-spray of water from the filled lower leg.

Ask Epy. I don't know how many times he has retracted his and gotten a "spray wash", but we are all waiting on baited breath to see if he has learned his lesson yet.

Disclaimer: I don't even know for sure if Epy even has O.C. poles, but had to throw in a "rip". It's been far too long.

Why do you need D clips when all you have to do is install the lower stow brackets, use them as template and drill a 9/32" dia hole all the way thru the pole and insert the 1/4" hitch pin?

BTW, the elec. pvc is the cheapest route, both poles and caps for less than $20.

HA! Because English is not easy and now I did my research. It's not "my" D pin.. and not "your" hitch pin. Technically they are "wire lock pins". But they are the same animal. Post hole pin with a retainer.

With regard to the pole costs.. with all due respect, I thought that was the point I was making with regard to the PVC poles. To re-iterate.. pre-made extendable painter poles are exponentially more expensive than a PVC pole setup. To quote myself, "cost a fortune more" (painter poles) than OC's PVC diagrams.

For the "on the go" though they are functional out of the box, fully customizable and fully compatible....

It's just the soft handle that came on the painting poles. I just shortened it for looks.

I used the exact same painter poles as offroad and stuck these on as feet. Shaving off the rubber hand grips from the poles was the most difficult part of the whole project. The built in hole step mech makes setup a 2 second afterthought.

I may be off base on this but from the picture you posted, the cabelas camping poles might work. As a portable and not permanent option. With a strap down could work. I have used the poles for years with tarps and they are very strong, light weight and height adjustable.

those look like they may work too, I am inn Ontario so I found that Canadian tire has them and they are already painted black per the picture so that will help out.

i painted up the brackets black to blend in and went with tent poles that are fully adjustable. I have decided to keep my poles stored under my bed instead of leaving them attached just going to use the D ring supplied by OC
