License req'ts in Ontario

This sucks as I was about to purchase a 2008 Cardinal 32' 5th wheel till I found out I need a class A driver's license if I pull 4600kg which is 10,141#.
The 5th wheel GVWR is 12080# dry weight approx 10300#. If I were to get caught or have an accident insurance would not cover me.
My dream rv is shattered!!!!!!!!!!!

I never heard of that one, a class "A" license. I must lead a sheltered life after all I live in MD. I am sorry to hear of your bad luck. I hope you find some way around it.

Same license as 18 wheeler

Can't believe we require same license as a commercial transport driver here in Ontario

I have a Class "B" non CDL and there is no special license required here. But I'll tell you what with the way some people drive here in the U.S.they need somthing other then 30 hours of class and 6 hour behind the wheel with a professional instructor. this is in the State of Maryland under the age of 18.

How is the class"A" for an RV different from a class"A" commercial? How is one effected by the laws of another state of this nature when one comes from a state that dose not require a special licence when visting or passing thought?

I stand correcteded . Will fall below A class requirement as trailer weight is measured at wheels. Pin weight when subtracted wil be ok.
Can't wait till next spring

I wonder what would happen if you got stopped at a police road check, like they do for semi's, and you were over the limit because of the load being carried in the trailer? I know it''s not likely, but...

Manitoba Class 3 License

Manitoba is similar. If your trailer GVWR is over 10,000 lbs you require a Class 3 license to register it in Manitoba. A class 3 is similar to a commercial license but does not have an air brake requirement and doesn't require a backing test! I don't know how that affects transients but our Driver Handbook says that all vehicles over 10,000 lbs GVW must stop at the weigh scales! I'm not licensed yet but will learn more when we hit the road this summer.

Good luck.

I also live in Ontario, and you are confusing the Yellow sticker requirement with the licence. There is an RV Guide at the MTO site that explains all this.
Following is a small quote:

A truck only:
Class "G" if the truck is registered for and weighs 11,000 kgs (24,250 lbs) or less, or
Class "D" if the truck is registered for or weighs more than 11,000 kgs.
A truck towing a trailer and/or a motor vehicle:
Class "G" if the truck is registered for and the combination weighs 11,000 kgs (24,250 lbs) or less,
Class "D" if the truck is registered for or the combination weighs more than 11,000 kgs, or
Class "A" if the weight of the towed vehicle or the combined weight of the towed vehicles exceeds 4,600 kgs (10,141 lbs).

Yellow Sticker:

An annual safety inspection is required:
- on a truck, which does not tow a trailer if:
- the truck's actual weight, registered gross weight or gross vehicle weight rating exceeds 4,500 kgs (9,920 lbs).
- on a truck, which tows a house trailer only:
- if the truck's RGW exceeds 4,500 kgs.
- if the truck's gross vehicle weight rating exceeds 4,500 kgs, or
- if the truck's actual weight (without the house trailer attached), exceeds 4,500 kgs.
Notes:
- house trailer weight is not used when determining a truck's actual weight.
- house trailer weight is used to determine a truck's RGW.
- a house trailer does not require an annual safety inspection.
- on both the truck and towed trailer (other than a house trailer) if:
- the truck's actual weight, registered gross weight or gross vehicle weight rating exceeds 4,500 kgs, or
- the actual weight of the truck, when added to the actual weight of the towed trailer or trailers exceeds 4,500 kgs, or
- the gross vehicle weight rating of the truck, when added to the gross vehicle weight rating of the towed trailer or trailers exceeds 4,500 kgs.

Check out the MTO Site at:

http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/tru...s/trailers.htm

http://www.e-laws.gov.on.ca/html/reg...s_940340_e.htm

http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/tru...ons/annual.htm

Something else you could do is go back to the dealer where you want to buy the trailer and ask them if your require a Yellow Sticker for the trailer you want. They should be able to answer all your questions regarding this problem. I went through the same thing you are doing back in September only to discover that it didn't apply to me. If you don't register the trailer to its full GVWR then it doesn't apply. Are you really going to load your trailer right up to it's potential of 4600kg? If not, then register it at 4590 and save yourself the problem. The same thing for your truck. If it is registered for licence purposes as a non-commercial vehicle (You don't use it for business purposes other than commuting to work) then it also doesn't require the A licence. Check out the MTO site, as well and good luck.

You are correct but a 1 ton pickup will require safety and emissions check every year.
I reregistered my F250 for personal use as selling dealer would not do it when we purchased it as gross truck weight just under 3000KG.
I weighed our 5th wheel at the axles and we are under by approx 800# from requiring A class drivers license.
If we were to move up to a 35' 5th wheel would definitely need A restricted dr license.

For those of you who don't live in Ontario, you have nothing to worry about. The police might pull you over or not, but can't fine you as you are not a resident of Ontario. This is the same throughout Canada and the US. You must conform to whatever is in effect in your home state or province, but you can't be fined if travelling through a state or province that is different than yours.
