My F250 came with a 26 gallon fuel tank. Not very good when traveling or towing. Reading this site put me onto a 50 gallon replacement aftermarket Titan Fuel Tank. Couldn't be happier.

I have considered an auxiliary fuel tank, but I am concerned about the added weight in the bed of the truck. I am already close to my max carry weight.

I went for the replacement. Got rid of the 26 gallon tank and put the 50 gallon tank where it was under the truck. Added about 200 lbs. to the truck when fully fueled up.

Chevy Duramax

Year, make, and capacity of tow vehicle: 2013 2500 HD Chevy crew cab with cab high canopy, 4WD, Allison 6 spd, 2:73 gears
Weight of tow vehicle: 7,450 (with tools in bed)
Engine and fuel type: Diesel Duramax 6.6 -- S-15 crap
Weight of loaded trailer or fifth wheel: 7,800 Keystone Outback + 1,100 Polaris X-2 ATV, total 8,900
Average speed while towing: 60-65 MPH
Average terrain (level, hilly, or mountainous 'L,H,M'): H-M combination mostly in Oregon.
Average Miles Per Gallon: 13-15
Best ever -- 16.6, from Knoxville to Asheville (mostly down hill)
Worst ever -- 11.8 -- pulling Willamette Pass, OR 58 from Eugene to Bend, OR
Average mileage not towing: around town, 17 +, all interstate (I-5) 21-22.
My truck was special ordered by someone else who did not take it when it finally arrived. Gear ratios and generally slow & steady acceleration with coasting to stops whenever possible are why I believe I am getting what I think of as good mileage. Prior Dodges and Fords driven much the same way got 10 or 11 at best but had 4:10/4:11 gears.
I wanted a Ford when I bought the Chevy but none available when I needed to make an emergency trip from Oregon to Florida and took a Chevy by default. Planned on trading it when I got back to Oregon and that was now 20 months ago. Love the Chevy. Might be the best truck I have ever owned and my wife will testify I have owned quite a few. If it holds together, I will likely keep this one longer than most.
Love the Allison tranny and the exhaust brake actually works! Tow/Haul mode works, too. Great fuel mileage and plenty of power. Edge Insight installed and watch the fuel economy gauge whenever accelerating. Drives close to a gas engine performance. Absolute dandy truck. Never owned a Chevy before, but this one is great.

Kenny,
I have no idea what the original buyer had in his mind, special ordering from the factory such an odd gear set. Never spoke to him. The dealer thought maybe hot shotting but I doubt that with those gears.
An old friend of mind used to deliver "My Little Salesman" and "Western Horseman" magazines to truck stops and parts houses in 9 western states for several years. He used a Chevy diesel truck with a long bed (took a bed off an older pickup to get a longer bed since Chevy was mostly 6'6" beds). Not a lot of weight to haul but lots of miles. Maybe he had something like that in mind. Don't know.
I was not sure about a gear set like that but I was headed to Florida in a big hurry and had to pull a small and light trailer. So, the gear set was not a problem for that trip. As it turned out, the Duramax is such a gutsy engine, the gear set doesn't really matter all that much. Excess of torque solves the problem. Plenty of torque fills in for the odd gear set. In any event, I love the truck and when it is time to trade again, I will consider special ordering a different gear set -- but probably not that one. Maybe like 3:55 or so? Diesel engine with lots of torque doesn't need the tall gears of the old gas trucks. Or, so it seems.
The odd gear set handles our little Outback just fine although it boggs a bit on steep grades. Even 6 % slows me to about 55 and kicks the RPM to around 1,750-1,800.

It's 3.73 gears not 2.73.
Since day one, 3.73 gears are the only available gears for 3500 and 2500 trucks with a duramax. You could get lower gears (numerically higher ) in the 4500 and 5500 trucks back when they were available.

Kenny,
I really do not know. The book with the truck is just the standard Chevy book with the standard Duramax add on. Nothing special from Chevy about what it can tow.
Our Outback is not real heavy, even though it has a frame to take the ATV inside it. It replaced a Keystone triple axle Raptor that was heavier than a dead preacher. I had a 2004 Ford 1 ton 6.0 diesel and the Raptor was really a bit more than I wanted when I had 3 ATV's and gas in the gas station and fuel in the on board generator. I weighed it on the free logging scales here in Oregon but do not remember the exact weight, but it had to be very heavy. That was a heavy unit. The Ford struggled on the grades and sometimes got down to 30-35 MPH with the pedal to the metal. So, I sold the Raptor, sold the Ford, bought the Chevy, and bought the little Outback. Works a lot better.
I would not have tried the Chevy with the Raptor. I would have thought it was too heavy for that gear set.

Kenny,
I just googled the Raptors and the one like ours in the factory specs was 15,900 dry and capacity for another 3,900 in gear and fluids. So, our Raptor could have been around 18-19,000. So, more than twice our Outback, maybe 2.5 times the Outback.

Kenny,
Of course you are right. At first, I was confused at your post because I was thinking 3:73 and it wasn't until I went back and saw I had typed "2.73" instead of "3.73" in the original post like I meant and thought I had typed. My bad. Better proof read better. My truck does not have 2:73 gears, it has 3:73 gears. Still, most of the pickups I have had have been 4:10/4:11 gears and so the 3:73 seemed low to me and the truck was special ordered. Sorry about that. Now I see why you were skeptical.

I'm a bit envious of the big diesels MPG but $10K will buy a lot of gas.

Does the Titan fit under the bed like the stock tank or does it go in the bed, I have a 2016 F350 Crew Short Box and would like a tank that doesn't void mfg warranty as mine only has 2300 miles
