Plugged tire

So I had a puncture in my new (<1k miles) 10-ply TV tires. It was in the center of the tire and plugged easily.

I generally run 40 psi when I'm not towing but go to 80 psi when I'm towing.

Is there any risk with the higher pressure while towing?

I probably worry WAY too much...

Plugs have been used for years with few issues......... but in the Commonwealth of Virginia tires will not pass state inspection if they are plugged. They have to be repaired from the inside.

Won't pass inspection?!?!? That's crazy! Good thing I'm slightly south of The Commonwealth in The Great State of NC! I believe I could pass inspection here with only 3 tires on!

I've been in Virginia since 1979 and I have never been rejected on an inspection for a plugged tire. I own a plumbing company and once had about thirty trucks on the road. Never have one of my vehicles been rejected for plugs in the tires.

If you are worried about it, take it to a tire place and have it taken off the rim and patched. You obviously are since you posted the question. They can look inside and be sure there is no other damage. Cheap compared to having it blow apart in the wheel well. There are enough problems with tires when they are not plugged, why take a chance.

If they do look at them there are to be rejected here. Our tire dealer will not plug a tire they will use a plug / internal patch set up..

This is the dealer who does it correct, and may end up saving your life. I'm going to interject here and tell ANYONE who uses a plug only, that they are a danger on the roads. It doesn't matter if you think that it's been done that way for years or I've never had a problem doing it.

If you don't remove the tire from the wheel and examine the inside for damage, you are taking a HUGE risk. We average repairing about 10 flats a day. Every one of our tires are repaired from the inside. I junk out several tires a week, after I examine the inside and the tire cannot be safely repaired. This can be from the tire splitting, being run flat and shredded on the inside, the object entering the tread but also damaging the inside of the sidewall (longer nails do this frequently), etc.

If I had just stuck a plug from the outside into the tire, I would never see this internal damage, and the tire could blow apart either when my guys are airing it up...or when a customer is driving down the road. People get hurt and killed from this.

Do it right people, or find a tire shop that will. The life you might save could be your own.

And this doesn't even include the risk of ply separation as well as voiding manufacturer warranty from an improperly repaired tire when using an external plug. I also have to cut out plugs and patch over them due to them leaking, and just plain missing the original hole when inserted. I did two today alone.
