Progressive 50amp EMS install

I am planning to install the 50amp EMS today and have a few questions.

Do I just pull the circuit breaker box and pull the feed cable out to connect to the input of the EMS and then a short cable from the EMS back to the panel?

That's what my mind tells me, but I'm not sure how or if this would affect the inverter / converter?

Any thoughts?

You had bought one of the portable units that you attach near the pedestal in line with your power cord, you'd be protecting everything after the EMS unit.

I installed my

Progressive Industries RV Surge and Electrical Protection industry lea

right as the power cord enters into my motorhome, and then connected to everything as usual after that point.

Just my opinion.

I bought about 3 ft of wire to go from EMS unit to breaker box, attached wire from breaker to input of EMS. Would have had enough of the wire there already that I could have just cut and installed EMS inline. Either way, depending on how much slack you have in wire.

Got it. Once I actually pulled it apart and looked it all made sense. The EMS is wired up and all the smoke stayed inside.

The EMS has a lot of great features but it doesn't act as a fuse or breaker, so there's likely very little advantage installing it closer to the power post except that it should be installed before a transfer switch if you have one. I have the 30A model installed in my TT and I use this separate little unit that I plug into the power post to test it before connecting. If the post fails I don't bother trying to park the TT if it's a back-in site.

I used the video feature on my phone to stick in the compartment and trace where most of the wiring was coming from and going. It appears that the power feed enters the camper just below the hall to the master bedroom. From there, it loops around and enters the breaker box that is located at the first step. The 12v lines do the same. The breaker box then sends power back out to the inverter and converter. I pulled the supply line from the breaker box and routed it through the wall into a kitchen cabinet. From there, I attached it to the EMS and used another piece of cable to run back through the wall and into the back of the breaker box.

Took me several hours to install, but most of that was spent peering into the area under the floor and removing vents and covers to better understand how everything was wired. Actual work time for the install was probably more like 20 minutes.

I believe that the next thing I am going to do before loading up the basement is cut the wall that separates the basement from the converter / inverter area and put in an access door. I can see myself on vacation and having something go wrong under there with no real way to get to it to fix. Adding the door now will provide access when needed in the future.

I am also preparing to install mine. According too the manual you can install it before or after the transfer switch. I will rarely run a generator, so I'm thinking before. But what's the preferred location?

This is from Progressive Industries' FAQ page:

"Q: Should a Hardwired EMS be installed before or after the transfer switch?
A: A hardwired EMS should be installed prior to the transfer switch. The reason for this is most RV generators already have built-in voltage and frequency protection. If the EMS is installed after the transfer switch, this leaves the transfer switch vulnerable to power problems."

Installed the HW30C today, also put in transfer switch and converter both Go Power products while I had the panel out. Installed the EMS before the switch. Everything went in easy and worked as it should. Gotta love youtube videos. Research and send the wife and kids shopping when you get started will help a lot. Got a couple of flexible solar panels up next. Going to use VHB tape.

When I did the install. I decided on the mounting location and then cut the power cord. That way there is no need to buy a small section of wire or trace the existing wire. Plus there is one less connection to be made. It took about 45 minutes.

I did the same although it took me longer than 45 minutes because I'm OLD. It took me about 8 minutes to get up off the floor each of the 16 times I had to go get another tool, etc.

Good point Mr. Dan. Fortunately I didn't send DW shopping like ezitin suggested. Therefore I didn't have to get up as often.

I made the mistake of putting mine in during high winds. The hatch door kept swinging around and smacking me in the head! Didn't do much damage, I kill enough brain cells on my own! 😀
